Pros: The original and still best WW2 documentary
Cons: Some key events given cursory coverage
Although the History Channel, etc tend to produce a lot of WW2 documentary work, a lot of it seems cheap, rushed, and uninsightful. This work, produced in 1974 long before specialty cable tacked these subjects full time, continues to endure as the quintessence of WW2 documentary. Every aspect of the war is covered, although I was somewhat disappointed that the naval engagement at Midway was not given more exposure - I consider this a pivotal event, and it was only given about 15 minutes. The coverage of the Eastern front is excellent, all of the key historical issues are explored, although Stalin is not exposed as incompetent as it is now understood he was during the Nazi invasion. That said, this is a NECESSARY addition to the shelf of any WW2-obsessed amateur historian. Don't even blink at the price, its well worth it. ...
