The haunting images in this mesmerizing book show women in such astonishing variety that no cliche or generalization about the sex will ever again suffice.
With her always penetrating and frequently ironic eye, Leibovitz has taken a haunting image of Joni Mitchell beside a fountain in an eerie garden setting and a shot of a haunted Nicole Kidman who looks like she has just seen Stanley Kubrick's ghost.
Introduced with a shrug from Susan Sontag, the result is richly various, often quite pleasurable, but rarely insightful. Though clearly drawn to her subjects, Leibovitz hardly ever touches or comprehends them. She understands fame but stops short before anything less, leaving us suspended: so close yet so far away.
The pictures are unremarkable, attractive, and good. In addition to the talent displayed in her trademark images, with their elaborate set-ups, flash illumination and saturated color, Leibovitz displays an excellent skill for mimicry of both commercial photographers and artists.
