Pro Reviews: Wingy Manone Collection, Vol. 4 (1935-36)

  • All Music Guide

Trumpeter Wingy Manone recorded pretty frequently during the year covered by this CD and his sextet/septet includes such top soloists (at one time or another) as clarinetists Matty Matlock and Joe Marsala, tenors Eddie Miller and Bud Freeman and trombonist George Brunies; plus trombone great Jack Teagarden is aboard for one session. With Manone taking spirited vocals on every selection, these Dixielandish performances gained an audience of their own during this early year in the swing era. Highlights of the fourth volume in this highly recommended series (which is reissuing all of Manone's recordings in chronological order) include "Lulu's Back in Town," "I'm Shooting High" and "The Music Goes 'Round and 'Round."

He pla... Read more
