A leading light of the Michigan space-rock scene, the Dearborn-based duo Windy and Carl comprised guitarist Carl Hultgren and bassist Windy Weber. Hultgren first began recording instrumental guitar-drone pieces in 1992, self-releasing a cassette, Portal, before teaming with Weber; by the end of 1993 they issued a single, "Watersong," on their own Blue Flea label. From 1994 to 1995 Windy and Carl expanded to a quartet with the inclusion of guitarist/keyboardist Randall Nieman and percussionist Brenda Markovich; the reconfigured group later issued an EP, Drifting, which was credited to Once Dreamt. After the departures of both Nieman (who went on to form Füxa) and Markovich, Windy and Carl continued as a duo, reissuing Portal complete with new material in 1994; the LP Drawing of Sound followed a year later, and in 1998 the duo resurfaced with Depths. The following year, the duo collaborated with synthesist Greg Gasiorowski and released the album Five Way Mirror; in 2000, they appeared at ~Terrastock and recorded their fourth album Consciousness. Windy Carl also run a record store in Dearborn, MI called Stormy Records.
