Note: Money is a problem for Ben Lindberg. A middle-aged college professor who has struggled to keep his intellectual life -- and his family life -- safe and secure, despite the incredible financial burdens that come with supporting a family of four on an academic's salary, he now faces a life-changing moral decision. After a few days away from home, following a long drive in the family's run-down station wagon, Ben returns home to find the family cat missing. When he goes out looking for the cat, he thinks he hears purring coming from the basement of an abandoned building in the neighborhood and breaks in. There, amid rubble and rats, he finds not only his cat but -- under a plastic tarpaulin -- seven plastic coolers... "He opened the lid. The cooler was filled to the top with stacks of fifty-dollar bills. He took a quick, involuntary breath ... He knew it had to be dirty money. Either that or it was counterfeit; he wasn't an idiot. He knew he should leave, but he couldn't. It was the most extraordinary moment of his life and he wanted to savor it ..". Ben takes the millions and hides them, and his life begins to improve. The van gets fixed and his family moves to a wonderful new house. But eventually strangers arrive in town looking for the coolers, and they stop at nothing to find them. |
