A protege of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, Wilfred Chevis honed an urbanized style heavily informed by his mentor's touch. Born in Church Point, Louisiana in 1945, Chevis grew up steeped in the traditions of Cajun "la-la" music, and learned to play accordion from his father. He mastered the instrument after becoming a pupil of Chenier, who even sold him the accordion he played throughout his professional career.
