A villain in Hollywood silents, in the sound era he was a suave, sophisticated, gentlemanly leading man of romantic comedies and light-hearted detective stories. Powell debuted on Broadway in 1912. In the early '20s he began appearing in silents; his first screen role was in Sherlock Holmes (1922), in which he played the detective's arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty.
