    Wild Seed Into Wild Flower

By Eric Halcon  Aug 4, 2007

    Pros: Interesting Debut

    Cons: ...a one-hit wonder?

She is one wild seed, one wild flower. Dionne Farris' career may have stalled after the release of her 1994 debut CD as a solo artist but still, her music edged to the forefront of pop and R&B in 1995. Thanks to the guitar-driven catchy chorus of... "I Know". "Wild Seed - Wild Flower" was released in October 1994. Classified as alternative hip-hop, Farris' music carries strong influences of the band she was a part before. If you have heard the song "Tennessee" by the group Arrested Development, then you have heard Farris strong alto voice before. The follow-up single "Don't Ever Touch Me (Again)" further solidified Farris' versatility in singing and songwriting. Lenny Kravitz even lent Farris a hand in penning the track "Stop To Think". She even dared to cross boundaries as she attempts to cover The Beatles' "Blackbird". Her truth seeking queries in "Human", done in a cappella style, sealed the deal that this wild seed will indeed give rise to a wild flower. Though silent for almost a decade now, Farris is rumoured to be working on a new album as of writing. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Wild Seed -- Wild Flower

  • All Music Guide

Following a successful stint with Arrested Development, including lending her vocals to their smash "Tennessee," Dionne Farris enlisted members of the band Follow for Now for her 1994 debut. Although Wild Seed -- Wild Flower only managed to spawn one hit, the percolating, infectious "I Know" was a monster, dominating the airwaves and lodging inside the Top Ten for months. It's hardly the only noteworthy track on this consistently engaging debut which blends funk, rock, pop, and folk. The insightful, soul-searching, and often self-empowering message of the lyrics is given added credence by the supple, soulful vocals of Farris and the musicianship doesn't let her down. Highlights include the sample-laden "Stop to Think" (with musical assistance from Lenny Kravitz), the uplifting "Passion," the heartfelt, introspective "Food for Thought," and the potent "Don't Ever Touch Me (Again)." Intelligent and winning, Wild Seed -- Wild Flower's charms run much deeper than "I Know," making for a str...iking initial effort. - Tom Demalon, All Music Guide Read more Less
