Under Wicked's Spell
, June 8, 2007Reviewer: cllawton1217 - See all cllawton1217's reviewsPros: This book has an excellent story.
Cons: You must pay special attention to the map in the front because the geography of Oz is mentioned several times.
Wicked is an excellent story of Elphaba, better known as the Wicked Witch of the West. This book reveals to us the way she gained that nickname and the story behind the little-known facts of her character. From Elphaba and Glinda being college roommates to the details of how the Tin Woodman came to be tin and the Cowardly Lion came to be so cowardly, Maguire gives us a whole new look into these characters we feel that we know so well. I would definitely recommend this book to any adult who is looking for a great read. This amazing novel will leave you wishing Dorothy had never come to Oz. ...

Pros: This book brought about a whole new side of the "Wicked Witch of the West."
Cons: We all know how she dies, and you just don't want her to.
This book is a fantastic example of how people become (or do) what others expect of them. Maguire gives Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) a whole new depth. Whereas in The Wizard of Oz, she mostly just zoomed in and out of scenes on her broom, Wicked gives her a past. The musical Wicked said it perfectly in the line, "Are people born wicked, or is wickedness thrust upon them?" This book seems to answer that question in a beautiful way. My only complaint is simply that we all know how she comes to her end, and I (personally) just did not want that to happen. However, Maguire takes a bit of a different approach with even that. I would truly recommend this book to any adult searching for a good read. ...
