Pros: great lyrics, great melodies...
Cons: very mellow, a bit too mellow...
what will be is David Gray's album White ladder rocks. Full of sadness, bitterness, anger, misery, and some hint of happiness. Love the songs "Sail Away" "White Ladder", "Babylon" and "This Year's Love". Full of great tracks and makes one good album for anybody's cd collection.
David Gray has put together something timeless. From the very first 10 seconds where the skip beat flows into the simple, yet earth moving piano chord of "Please Forgive Me", the listener cannot turn back. Gray transports the ear to a place that pulls from the best of John Lennon and Elton John and creates what will be known as a masterpiece. Songs like "Nightblindness" struggles with the murkiness left in the wake of self-realization. The track "Sail Away" takes a breakup and throws a rusty romance of a man who knows himself without a companion in his life. Overall an album that will even make the biggest, badass cry on a cool Autumn evenig as he remembers friends, loves and those who are gone. Perhaps the song "This Year's Love" will be repected for what it is. A man sitting down and playing the piano (the most beautifully exposing instrument ever)and writing the greatest one of those damn goood love songs...ever. Its the gem of the album. The diamond amongst the pearls.
This is one of the best albums in the past ten years.
this is by far the best cd in the world. david is the greatest song writer/performer ever.

This is a gorgeous album!!! Everyone should
own a copy...you won't be disappointed. :)
White ladder has no bad songs on it. It's an album that stands out from all the crap pop that is about these days. So if you like the singles released just go out and buy it and it won't dissapoint.
This is simply one of the best albums ever made my anyone! I am a huge fan of David Gray and hold him as high as I hold bands like REM and Dave Matthews. Simply amazing and a treat for my ears!

Oh David Gray "Where for art thou?" David's music came from striaght from heaven. I overdosed on it so much that I in question sailed away from all my pain and problem into the arms of a David Gray look alike. Touched by bliss for split seconds then dumped. But I still love you Gray. He(ex), doesn't have your CD.

I got the album at christmas and I thought and think that it is truly brilliant with the vocals and the wholea build up of each song. This album I took to spain with me and it is totally a relaxing and calming cd and you never get bored of it. Most definate BUY
David Gray is incredible! I heard "Babylon" on the radio months ago and thought he had a great voice, plus the song was so unlike anything I'd ever heard. Then not too long ago, I heard "Please Forgive Me," and my initial reaction was that the song was pure and honest beauty. The guitar arrangement just completely blew me away, and the lyrics are so expressive without being sappy. I finally broke down and bought the cd, and I can't stop listening to it! The two songs of his on the radio now don't even do him justice as an artist.
This is a very mature CD. It is, as the reviews have shown, a love/hate CD. You will either love it (like me) or hate it. It is in the family with Dave Matthews and Edwin McCain. I recommend this CD to anyone that enjoys a bit of blues in their music.
Just wondering if anyone has noticed how different this CD is from his earlier ones. I saw David Gray on Austin City limits the other day for the 1st time having never hear of him. I was generally impressed and liked most of his songs. So I bought White Ladder unheard and was disappointed because of the hip-hop beats of the drums etc. on many of the songs. I don't think they go very well with the style of his music. So I listened to samples of his other CD's and they don't have these tecno beats. I liked his other CD's better. I think "Lost Songs" is probably his best most purest songs. I wish I had bought it instead of "White Ladder".
Anybody every read Atlas Shrugged? If not, the basic premise is that the critics are telling everyone what is good and what isn't while the intelligent ones slowly disappear. From what I've heard of this album...well I can't say, that would be abusive. By the way, in response to another review, there's alot more music than boy bands and this junk, make your own decision and don't just blindly follow the critics.
I think that this album is great!!! I can listin to it over and over, and I don't get tired of listining to it.
I first heard the song Babylon and liked the beat and great lyrics. So I bought the album and loved it. Then I was watching "15 Minutes" with Ed Burns and heard "Sail Away" and knew I had heard that song somewhere. He's got a definate style that is just great.
David's music and lyrics are one of the best I have ever heard. Had just heard about him from a friend, thought to myself why haven't I heard of him before now? He is simply the best writer I have heard, his voice is pretty darn good also!
It took David Gray four albums before finally gaining the recognition he'd so long deserved. Now that he's made it and , seemingly at the peak of his powers, let's hope future releases continue the high standard. With its subtle, melodic tunes and accomplished songwriting, this is easily the best record of recent times - better than anything by All Saints or Craig David.
David Gray is truly one of the best singer/songwriters in the business today. "White Ladder" demonstates his honestly and love for his music and expression. Bravo!!!!!!!!!
Let's look at what's not here...There's not a group of 5 lads on the cover, all dressed in white. There's not a scantily clad, 17 year old, hottie. There's no "video diary - free with purchase" sticker. There's just dynamic, heartfelt, straightforward brilliance. This is one of the best CDs I've purchased in the last 2-3 years; on par melodically with Seal's second album and the new "Velvet" single by A-ha. To anyone who appreciates an artist pouring themselves into their work...purchase this CD.
After mostly playing folk-type music, David Gray has finally found his niche. He adds cool drumbeats, which were not present on his earlier albums. This is his best work yet, and I highly recommend it.
Just a perfect musician in every aspect.

This is one of the best records I have ever listened to. If you sit back and listen you hear a bit of bob dylan. If I had to rate this album I would say it is my 20 of all time and for a prog rock fan that is pretty good. I would advise the to anybody.
One of my favorite artists is Jim Croce... And i must say that David Gray shows us what it would be like if Croce was still around today and had gotten into techno.
Gray's album shows us a few high points and a couple lows as well. In "Please Forgive Me" I could have sworn he sampled Croce's voice or something cause he sounds a lot like him. "Babylon" comes off as boring, but still thought-provoking. "My Oh My" is proabably one of the stronger songs on the album. Not necesarily in terms of it kicks ass, but it's just a good song. Medium points on the album include "Nightblindness," and "White Ladder." A major low point throughout the whole album is that his songs are way too long and way too repetitive at that. He's gotta move away from this looped drum
