Poor Design, Rough on Clothes, Special Detergent

Pros: Cleans well

Cons: Rough on clothes, runs too long, special detergent, How did this get Energy Star rating?

We didn't want a front loader, already experienced leaky front seals so we were looking for a high capacity top loader. Whirlpool/Kenmore treated us well over the years. We have had this since October of 2006. 1. Cleans well - This has a washplat...e, Whirlpool claims this washes better. So far it has. 2. Rough on clothes - BEWARE, the spin cycle (I assume that is the culprit) ties clothes in knots and tears holes in clothes. We have had this happen more than once. Brought this up to Whirlpool factory rep and they stated they will take that into consideration for future designs....No fix now. 3. Special detergent - Needs "HE" detergent which is not only more expensive, but, at least in my area is hard to find. Sometimes we have to drive 35 miles to find it. There goes any energy savings. 4. Runs too long - Minimum run time to wash a normal load of clothes is 44 minutes. It is using electricity the whole time. Energy savings.....down the drain again. 5. No water level choice - This machine does not give you the choice to choose the water level, therefore you have to rely on it to decide. Maybe it makes the right choice...I do not know, but nobody in the family likes that feature. Let us decide, not a machine. ***Energy Star Rating? **** How did it get that? It runs almost twice as long as a "normal" machine. I haven't put an amp meter on it yet, but I might out of curiosity. The special detergent may cause you to drive a long way to obtain it, more energy used in gas, not to mention your time. No water level choice? You can not choose to save water.
