Ah this is more like it. If you had to own one record from 1986 - This is the one. Not only because it is fantastic but becasue of its musical significance. Was released on 7" and 12" - the latter including garage instrumental Gravedigger. Released on Eddie Pillars (54321) Countdown Records, a subsidiary of Stiff and the forerunner of Acid Jazz.
"Whenever I'm Gone" Starting off a little overproduced with Atlantic soul flavoured brass, the track kicks of into laviathon of storming power pop, Hammond grooves and brass over Graham Days gravelly garage vocals. More garage in a Medway styley on the flip side with "Promised Land". "Gravedigger" is pure surf garage. A more rawcus version of "Whenever I'm Gone" appears on Prisoners album "In from the cold".
The last single released by the Prisoners before keyboardist James Taylor left with bass player Allan Crockford to form the JTQ and singer guitarist Graham Day joined Fay Hallam (Day)and Martin Blunt from Makin' Time and Jonathan Brookes to form the Gift Horses. Graham and Fay went on to form the Prime Movers with Allan Crockford whilst Jonathan and Martin went on to form the Charlatans. ...
