    Only Half Awesome

    By Jonathan  Dec 3, 2004

Pros: great first five songs to begin CD

Cons: gets boring after the fifth track

This was the first CD of BFF's I bought (no, I didn't buy it for "Brick" like most people). I opened it up, popped it in, pressed play, and was instantly blown away by just the opening 5 seconds. "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Sole...mn Faces" is just one of the downright coolest songs ever and an absolute bang to begin the CD. "Fair" is good but it gets kind of boring towards the end. I'm always surprised "Brick" was such a hit -- it's good but it's not crazy good. "Song for the Dumped" is one of my favorite songs -- it is so awesome!! All the solos in the middle are so amazingly cool and there's such emotion in it, I'm sure it would be an absolute blast to play live on stage. I love singing along to it (as well as to "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces"). "Selfless, Cold, and Composed" is a real mellow, somber song, but I like it a lot. As for the rest of the CD, it's just average, nothing really stands out. The hidden track, I must say, is pretty sweet. Anyway, I recommend this CD, but only if you can handle the extreme awesomeness of Ben Folds's piano. Read more Less

This album is filled with great music & some great messages or atleast lyrics to go along. Unfortunatley there is a lot of cursing & some ify messages in this album as well.

Pro Reviews: Whatever and Ever Amen

  • All Music Guide

Expanding on the hook-laden songcraft of their eponymous debut, the Ben Folds Five turn in another glitzy array of Todd Rundgren-esque, piano-driven pop on their second album, Whatever and Ever Amen. Though it isn't as consistently tuneful and clever as their first record, Whatever and Ever Amen has a snazzy sense of popcraft -- the hooks of "The Battle of Who Could Care Less," "Brick," and "Fair" sink in nearly as effortlessly as Billy Joel, Elton John, or Joe Jackson -- which makes the record enjoyable ear candy. Occasionally, Folds' smug humor -- whether it's the alternative rock skewering of "The Battle" or the borderline misogynist humor of "Song for the Dumped" -- can undercut his melodic gifts, but Whatever and Ever Amen is confirmation that the showy pop pleasures of his first record were no fluke.

Biography

Ben Folds Five

Led by the popminded prowess of their namesake frontman, Ben Folds Five dispelled any misgivings about a band's ability to rock without guitars. Calling themselves "punk rock for sissys," the Chapel Hill natives were often grouped with the nerd rock movement of the mid'90s, although their debt to jazz music not to mention Ben Folds' acerbic spin on the classic pianist/... Read more
