An Album Years in the Making...

    Pros: Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt

    Cons: None

Two of the most talented vocalists in the music business, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, will blow the listener away with this amazing duet album. Harris' haunting vocals and songwriting are beautifully represented and perfect for the songs s...he leads on. Ronstadt's powerfully strong voice takes charge on the songs she sings the lead on. Solo, they are incredible... together, they are unbelievable. Emmylou Harris stuns on the haunting "1917," "All I Left Behind" and the Rosanne Cash-penned "Western Wall." Ronstadt takes center stage with songs like "For a Dancer," "Falling Down" and the Sinead O'Connor cover "This is to Mother You." Emmylou Harris wrote or co-wrote three songs on the album "Raise the Dead," "Sweet Spot" and "All I Left Behind." If you are a fan of Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, or just good music, then this is a must have. Read more Less

This is a great collaboration between (essentially) two good friends who love to make music together. Their completely disparate vocal styles somehow blend to form a wonderful sound that ranges from aching to rocking. The songs on WW are not run-of-t...he-mill by any stretch. Harris herself, Leonard Cohen, Springsteen, etc. produce material that demands more than just a casual listen. Ronstadt, music's most underrated female vocalist, sounds incredible and should be required study for every up and coming tweeny-bopper. Harris is the real deal as well... her dues have been paid into the next millenium.Jackson Browne's "For a Dancer," Sinead O'Connor's "This is to Mother You," and the McGarrigle's "All I Left Behind" showcase these two fantastic women and their supreme musical rapport. • All Music Guide

Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris have frequently collaborated over the course of their long careers. Their voices are made for each other in a yin-yang meeting of Ronstandt's rich velvet alto and Harris' songbird-sweet soprano. The Tucson Sessions takes their collaborations to new heights. A collection of covers and originals tracing various paths of love and loss, the performances seem to have breathed in the desert where they were recorded. Arrangements airy as the space between desert and sky are grounded by gritty guitars, splashed with color from folk instruments and filled with glorious harmonies. Well known singer/songwriters are covered -- Patty Griffin, Andy Prieboy, Rosanne Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Bruce Springsteen. Traditional presentations of Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy" and Springsteen's "Across the Border" take on new dimensions as sung by women. The spare arrangement and delicate harmonies lend a wonderful wistfulness to Cash's "Western Wall." A surprising cover choice w...ith beautiful results is Sinead O'Connor's "This Is to Mother You." The album's best track, "1917," was written by folk singer David Olney. It's impossible to imagine anyone else singing this haunting tale of soldiers and women in WWI. Fragile and breathtaking, Harris' voice is buoyed by the angelic harmonies of Ronstadt and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Harris also contributes, along with some collaborators, three tracks to the album, notably the spirited "Raise the Dead." - Theresa LaVeck, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Linda Ronstadt

With roots in the Los Angeles country and folk-rock scenes, Linda Ronstadt became one of the most popular interpretive singers of the '70s, earning a string of platinum-selling albums and Top 40 singles. Throughout the '70s, her laid-back pop never lost sight of her folky roots, yet as she moved into the '80s, she began to change her sound with the times, adding "new wa... Read more
