WD is Great, Maxtor Sux!
, July 1, 2002Reviewer: Karl K - See all Karl K's reviews13 of 13 Yahoo! Users found this Western Digital Caviar wd800bb review helpful Western Digital is awesome! This may be a little off the subject, but Maxtor has been the worst investment for my computer; it was an 80 gig, 5400rpm, model number 98196H8. I purchased it from a company online which I will not name, and the first one was a lemon, the only thing I got from it was mechanical noise, the second one (after I sent the first one back for a "good One") seemed to be ok, other than some noise, at first. As time went by (2 months) the latency was horrible, and noise was makin' me madder and madder (I know I could have d/l a noise reducing program, but I shouldn't have had to, it should automatically be quieter than that). Finally I couldn't take it any more and decided to back up all the info that I could onto my 40 gig and delete the un-needed stuff. IT TOOK AN HOUR AND A HALF TO BACK UP 300 MEGS!!!!!! It took me 3 days to back up the important stuff and I had to just delete the rest, I only got about 15-20 gigs backed up, and I tried everything to speed up the process... I took out my cd-rw and dvd drives, I closed every program and even lowered my graphics to try to speed stuff up, nothing worked! This may have been bad luck... maxtor may be good to other people (like people who don't have anything important to back-up and store. I have never in my life had a problem with Western Digital and I have had many, not just 3 (you may have had some bad luck as well if 2 WD died on you, that sux). I have owned Western Digital hard drives from around 500 megs, to 1281.9 megs to 80000 megs they are very dependable, quick, quiet, and great for gaming... if you want an alternative to Western Digital, I have heard that Seagate is a very good gaming hard drive as well, but will run you a little more money. (I don't know if I am supposed to name sites in this review, but a web site with the first word "price" and the second word "watch" is a good price checking source :) ). Sorry for the long review, I just don't want anyone else to go through the problems I did with Maxtor. ... -
Hope it last 3 years, WD
, June 30, 2002Reviewer: laosnews - See all laosnews's reviews4 of 4 Yahoo! Users found this Western Digital Caviar wd800bb review helpful Three years ago I had three WD drives, one died after 1-1/2 years of using, 2nd one died right after 3 years, and 3rd one is still running. After those disasters, I switch to Maxtor hard drives. I now have 6 Maxtor drives running ranging from 1 year to 3 years. No problems for Maxtor drives yet. But on May 27, 2002, after comparing to a 80 gig (7200rpm) Maxtor which cost $130+plus tax, I bought 80 gig (7200rpm) WD drive which cost $100+plus tax. That's $30 cheaper and I'm willing to give WD one more try. Hope it last three years! ...
