We Own The Night Predictable and Unoriginal

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 6, 2008

Pros: The movie seemingly writes itself as it goes along.

Cons: The problem with the movie writing itself is that it makes it borderline predictable. Audiences, in turn are right more often than not when predicting what will happen from one scene to another.

We Own The Night is not the worst crime drama ever written. But it is also not the best crime drama ever written, either. As a matter of fact, it is quite average in comparison to the likes of The Untouchables, or perhaps The Departed. The script fee...ls almost cliche, as if this same storyline has been done before. It more than likely has. If anything, this movie is borderline predictable. The only reason that it received an "R" rating is because of the amount of violence, sexuality, and foul language. Let us also not forget the depictions of drug use, as well. Given, the sex, violence, and foul language (and depictions of drug use) were necessary parts of the story line. They were used to show the distinct dichotomy between the lives of brothers Joseph and Bobby Grucinsky. Joseph plays an NYPD police officer, whereas his brother is a club owner who works with drug dealers who help to keep his club running. The problem with showing this separation between Joseph and Bobby is that from the very beginning, audiences are led to predict what is going to happen next. More often than not, audiences are right about what is coming because of the way that the movie (which clocks in at just under 2-hours) was written. It feels as if the movie wrote itself as it went along. This may be a good thing to some, but in paying attention, the fact that it seemingly wrote itself led to foreshadowing that nearly gave away what was going to happen from one scene to the next. In some cases, it even went so far as to blatantly give away what was going to happen from one scene to another, leaving very little to surprise audiences. One reviewer had his comment on the movie posted on the back of the DVD case, alleging that the movie was better than The Departed. Sadly, the only reason that audiences will find themselves paying attention to this movie is in order to see if their guesses about the next scene are right. Read more Less

    Pros: Story of Brotherly Love

Cons: remind me of when drugs were cool!

4 great Actors create this 80's period piece of 2 Brothers on opposite sides of the law. Beyond what has separated their family, when the time comes to be there for each other, they come together. What I liked is that it created the period well. ...It also brought up feelings of what I would do for my family if I had to. Worth every minute! Read more Less
