Way Past Midnight boasts little of the passion or energy that distinguished Henry Lee Summer's previous Epic LPsthis is heartland rock with its heart ripped out, a naked bid for commercial success that reeks of desperation and flop sweat. Nothing here worksthe formulaic songs and glossy overproduction effectively neuter Summer's gritty vocals, a wussification that culminates with the opening "Till Somebody Loves You," a cowrite with schlock merchant Diane Warren and fellow mullet champion Michael Bolton. No less egregious is the environmental anthem "Dear Earth," which swaps Summer's signature meatandpotatoes rock for tofu.
