Pros: interesting, adictive, historicly accurate, leaves you thinking about it for days

Cons: ? cant think of any

This book captivated me from begining to end and long after i was put the book down. The scenes and the characters were illustrated as real as a movie. This book covers romance, friendship, struggles, and murder and everything in between. There is no... boring or dry parts in this book, it even has a bit of humor. Its about a boy in the great depression who was finacially cut off from college due to his parents' deaths and he didn't know where to turn but almost by accident got aboard a train for the traveling circus! The other half of the book is when the boy is nintey three years old in assisted living wondering where all the time has gone, this part is more witty and even funny. This book will probaly make a great movie but i hope it doesn't turn into one, becuase this book is too perfect to be ruined by actors and sets. the imagery of novel is movie enough. great read Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Water for Elephants

  • Enhanced Muze Note

Gruen skillfully humanizes the midgets, drunks, rubes and freaks who populate her book.

  • Enhanced Muze Note

For pure story, this colorful, headlong tale of Depression-era circus simply can't be beat. Heroes, villains, romance, a wild-animal stampede! Big fun from page 1.

Publisher Notes: Water for Elephants

  • As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.
