Pro Reviews: Washboard Rhythm Kings, Vol. 1

  • All Music Guide

The Washboard Rhythm Kings (whose personnel changed from session to session) was an unusual group to be on record during the early part of the Depression, for they were a good-time band usually featuring a washboard, spirited vocals, an occasional kazoo, and a few horns. There were no major soloists in the group (guitarist Teddy Bunn, who is on ten of the 24 selections on this first volume, comes the closest) and they mostly covered current hits from other artists (including on this CD "Minnie the Moocher," "Walkin' My Baby Back Home," "You Rascal You," "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby," "Stardust," and "Georgia on My Mind"), but they were always a fun band to hear. This Swedish import CD has The Washboard Rhythm Kings' first two dozen recordings.
