Pro Reviews: Washboard Rhythm Kings (1930-1933)

  • All Music Guide

This long out-of-print French RCA album (subtitled Black and White: Vol. 192) has 16 selections by the Washboard Rhythm Kings and its offshoots the Washboard Serenaders and the Rhythm Kings. A sampler rather than a reissue of the group's complete recordings, this spirited set was a recommended acquisition when it was available; fortunately most of the selections have since been reissued on CD. Among the key players on some tunes are banjoist Steve Washington, bassist Ghost Howell (both of whom sing), pianist Clarence Profit, guitarist Teddy Bunn, trumpeter Taft Jordan and various washboard players. This is fun goodtime music so pick up the Collector's Classics CDs.
