A dream swirl of a begining

    By Gugumba  Dec 16, 2001

The Warlocks were off to an amazing start pumeling through influence from Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Sonic Youth. Such a swirl of psychadelia makes this an amazing ep, and this band will definatly make many amazing ...records to come.Ben.the 14 year old. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Four guitarists, two drummers, a bassist, and a tambourine jam on repetitive riffs and rhythms to amass a wall of white noise that shoots directly to your reptilian brain. Bobby Hecksher's Warlocks continue a musical trajectory that he began while working with Beck in his early days and then with the Rolling Stones-worshipping Brian Jonestown Massacre. "Cocaine Blues" is the standout on the wholly brilliant EP The Warlocks. Its intricately woven guitar lines twist under Bobby Hecksher's druggy, hazy, lazy Lou Reed vocals. The Warlocks don't hide the impact of the Velvet Underground and "Song for Nico" takes the slow build of a tune like "Heroin" and blows it up into a gorgeous drone. Spacemen 3, Spectrum, and Spiritualized hang on like conjured up ghosts, but the Warlock's space rock is less likely to trip you out into a mindless netherzone then rock your world.

Biography

The Warlocks

Indeed, it's been a long strange trip for Warlocks leader Bobby Hecksher since his band played their first gig on July 4th, 1998. Hecksher, who moved to California from Florida in the late '80s, formed his first group shortly after arriving. Charles Brown Superstar issued two singles and two full-length albums before calling it a day. Hecksher was later invited to play ... Read more
