    Smart, interesting, original.

Call me boring, but I am no longer impressed with tasteless action movies, nor do I find anything interesting in cheesy horror flicks, nor do I find anything slightly funny about the movies that we tend to call comedy these days. In fact, I'm not im...pressed with much of our modern day entertainment. Couldn't we really cut down on blatant marketing, dumb girls in bikini's and stupid jocks drinking beer? What I do like, is entertainment that is fresh, new, interesting, inspiring and somehow connects me with the core of my humanity. Put bluntly, I like intelligent movies. Waking Life just happens to be one. Not only did it keep me interested all the way through, with witty humor, intelligent philosophies and stunning visuals, it left me with a feeling that there was more to life than meets the eye. And that, is what I call intelligent. Read more Less

Wonderful. Thought provoking dialogue that cleverly reiterates the question, Am I a man dreaming that I am a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that I am a man? Brilliant!! Two thumbs and two wings up.

to write a review of the subject matter in this film would be somewhat pointless, considering the content of the film. amateur philosophers, such as myself, will find the vast array of topics and profound statements to be extremely interesting. your ...average joe, however, could easily become bogged down in the rhetoric and semantics of much of the subject matter. in short, if you like to think critically and abstractly, this is a great film to get the juices flowing, so to speak. the use of rough animation is a fantastic meduim to portray the dream state of the main character. it can, however, become disorienting at times as styles and colors change dramatically, as do characters and scenes. there were a couple times where i had to watch a scene over with my eyes closed in order to focus on what was being said (and even then i had to watch it again to understand it). overall, it was a great indie film with a lot of profound material to easily fill an evening of conversation for a room full of friends. for me, it provides endless hours of silent comtemplation well into the morning. A-MAZE-ING!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 5, 2002

While the draw of this film's almost psychedelic look is great, the real value in the film comes from its philosophical questioning of the political and physical system that society at large takes for granted. This movie is a must see for everyone! ... For a person willing to open their mind, it is very enlightening. For the close-minded, maybe it will help to alter their views slightly. Read more Less

    a delayed reaction

I have to admit that I didn't really understand this flick at first. It didn't seem to have a plot and jumped from one scene to the next without much order, but the animation alone was amazing enough to have me buy the film. Not since "What Dreams ...May Come" has a movie been presented with such rich and vibrant imagery and color. (Why is it that the "dream" movies get all the beauty?) Now that I've watched it a few times (along with the animation tutorial on the DVD), I'm beginning to understand what I couldn't grasp at first glance. A plot it may not have, but meaning it does. It's more of a string of lucid dreaming, life questioning sequences that aim at making the viewer question their own life and the world around them. The end result? One of the best movies I've ever seen. That is, after about 6 viewings, I fell in love. Read more Less

Watch it once for the animation and then

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 21, 2002

...for the dialogue.Waking Life is definitely a movie you need to see twice (at least) to appreciate fully. First off, the animation (rotoscoping) is fantastic and that alone makes it one of the best movie ever. But when I saw it in the theatre I mis...sed a ton of good dialogue between the various people in the movie b/c I was concentrating on the animation so much. So I’m really glad I decided to get this on DVD. I’ve watched it 3 times so far and keep finding new stuff in it, both visually and in the dialogue. I’d have to say it’s my favorite movie right now. philosophical go-kart ride

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 8, 2002

This movie blew me away. It is quite a departure from Dazed and Confused but is much more intellectually potent. It is full of philosphical questions and will keep you thinking about the questions it makes you ask yourself. However, it lacks no humor... and has good flow. It may lack clarity for some but to those who want to be amazed and a little confused by a movie, it is perfect. Read more Less

Visually impressive movie about what? Sounds like every boring pontificator you ever knew gathered to do monologues in this film. 5 stars for visual, 1 for audio.
