    Wagons West is a thorough four-disc box set containing 115 songs the Sons of the Pioneers recorded for RCA/Victor during the '40s, when the group was at the height of their popularity. Containing all of their best-known songs and hits like "Cool Water," "Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima," and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," plus several unreleased tracks and alternate takes, the set is the most complete portrait of the group's peak that has ever been drawn. Of course, the sheer length and weight of the set means that only musicologists and diehard fans will find Wagons West consistently compelling, yet it still stands as one of the most essential -- and comprehensive -- western and cowboy box sets ever assembled.
