Pros: Much more raw than "Ten"
Cons: Still thinking...
Though most fans may deny it, I think somewhere in the back of their minds they thought Pearl Jam would fall victim to the "Sophomore Slump"...I know I did a little bit. Honestly, how do you follow up a debut release whose music partially defined the 90's and helped put Seattle music back on the map? Fortunately, for me anyway, they did with "Vs.".
Don't get me wrong, I liked "Ten" - obviously enough to go to the store at midnight to pick up their next offering. But the spit-shined and polished production stifled the material there, where the raw sound of the band on "Vs." really allows the songs, and them, to shine without regressing. Even the lighter moments, like the folk-tinged "Indifference", the pop sensibility of "Glorified G", and the pure funk of "Rats" still has that D.I.Y., garage attitude. And the songs that rock, like "Animal", "Rearviewmirror"
;, and "Blood" rock hard without sounding inexperienced or immature. They knew what they were doing, and did it well.
The spotlight track on this one is easily "Go". The urgency that is built both musically and lyrically (though it's rumored to be about Eddie's car) is slow, but steady. By the end of the song, however, you're screaming right along with every nerve engaged. Intense and fantastic.
Considering their body of work, as a whole, it's difficult to pick a favorite album from this band. But if this release wasn't as strong as it was (and is), who knows where they would have gone?
Pros: everything is great about this cd!
Cons: none at this point in there career
this was a great follow up to there debut album ten.this was back at a point betweeen 91 and 95 that pearl jam was at there best.songs such as go,animal, and blood showing there heavier side. along with great acoustic based songs such as daughter and elderly woman showing a more stripped side of the band. along with everyone else back in 93 i couldnt wait for this cd to be released. eddie vedder to this day is still one of the best vocalists and pearl jam the most imitated bands of all time. people that are just discovering pearljam, should check out the first 3 albums 91 album ten...... 93 album vs and 94 album vitalogy. there 98 album yield is better then average and probaly there last really good cd. i would pass on no code.. and riot act. i will say what everyone else is thinking if pearl jam would go back to where they were between 91 and 95 they could still rule again. i really miss that era of music everything was so new and exciting.back when pearl jam were the kings.
Pros: Everything about this album!
Cons: None
Ok, when I bought this album I wasn't a big Pearl Jam fan. I had Ten and liked it a lot, but I wanted more so I bought their second album. The second I turned on the CD and heard my all-time favorite song "Go" start up, I was hooked. I put the song on repeat for hours before I even listened to another song on the album--it was that freakin' awesome! (This has happened to me with one or two other songs, one of them being Nirvana's "Breed" and the other being Metallica's "Ride the Lightning"). I still hadn't had enough of "Go", but I wanted to see what else Pearl Jam had in store for me, the beautiful "Daughter", the hard-rockers "Animal", "Blood", and "Leash" (get outta my
;, to name a few. The album just blew me away. Pearl Jam quickly became my favorite band and still is today. This album is the best album I've ever heard and I'm waiting for a Vs. 2 if Pearl Jam has that one in store for us. Don't get me wrong, I love Pearl Jam's new stuff, but I'm a bigger fan of their heavy songs which come few and far these days. I recommend Vs. for anybody who's looking for a hardcore rock album. The lyrics are amazing if you listen to them also. W.M.A. has the best lyrics of any song I've ever heard besides the sad but true "Jeremy".
Rock on Pearl Jam,
one of the best album of the band.
vs. the way to play music with honor.
this is pearl jams shining moment before they got boring. very good album with all the great songs if you are just discovering them make this one a must
AND IT ALSO REMINDS ME OF SOME GOOD TIMES...
SONG HIGHLIGHTS: ANIMAL, RATS & REARVIEWMIRROR.
This has to the best Pearl Jam album ever, they will never come close to this.
All of the songs on this album suck except for "Rearview Mirror". Pearl Jam needs to die along with Dave
Whoever said this was Grunge? Sounds more like 80s hair metal. Argh! Crap!
Okay, did someone down there compare PJ to f*cking Creed?!?! Buddy, the reason why Creed even has a record contract is because of the path Pearl Jam paved. Versus is not their best work, in fact it ranks fourth on my overall list of their studio albums. The thing is...one of their "albums that is not perfect" (i didn't want to say weak) is still better than anyone elses best. They are the survivors, the truth of that movement from which they were spawned. Listen to Nirvana...they are worshiped because they never conformed - then their music got boring, Kurt killed himself, and that was that. Everytime Eddie and company release an album they push aside trying to please fans...they do it for the music (THAT IS IT). In turn they have been rewarded by colaborating to produce some of the most influential and timeless pieces of music in the past 20 or more years. Versus with its earthy vibe and gorgeous acoutic feel (they recorded it in a cabin - no need for studio tricks to improve the best voice ever) is an album that speaks to both sexes on political revolution, loss, love, and cander towards humans. They matter. Not because they are anything more than human, but because they represent what people in their position did in th late '60s. The represent the listener and why things should be different.
Everytime I listen to this albulm, I think back to the year it was released (1993) and how I was just a scrawny freshman in highschool, getting my ass kicked everyday by upperclassmen. Maybe not the best of times, but still a period of exploration for a young man in his pre-adulthood. They same thing holds true for Pearl Jam's 2nd release "Vs." After their groundbreaking debut, they seem a little unsure of themselves and what to make of their newly-grunge pop audience. But they have all the elements present which vaulted them to fame first place, and for that, they don't dissapoint. Some incredible music of the grunge genre is present onthis CD, and tracks like "Daughter," "E.W.B.A.C.I.A.S.T" remind the listener of how unique and gifted Pearl Jam truly is. Some of the tracks are cluttered within the albulm, and they, much like an inside joke, seem to make little sense to anyone except the band. But songs like "Dissadent" "Go" and "Rearview Mirrow" (my favorite track on the albulm) show the fire that rocks within' the core that is Eddie Vedder.
This person before me doesn't deserve to be a Pearl Jam fan, if you think Ten is awesome, but think Vs. sucks! All of Pearl Jam's studio albums are great. They do not make a bad song. So i think you should take a second listen to Vs.
"Hey wait a second...I'm listining to VS right now and I can't find JEREMY anywhere on it...and where's ALIVE and EVENFLOW??? Man, this album isn't TEN at all...IT SUCKS!!!"
Is anyone else tired of listening to (less inteligent persons) b*tch and w*ne about how everything after T*N s*cks, just because it doesn't s*und like T*N? * kn*w * am.
Anyway, in the long run VS is probably PJ's weakest record. It starts out strong, but somewhere in the middle it gets a little tedious with great songs surrounded by not so great songs.
As I said before, the begining is as strong as ever. GO is definitly my favorate PJ opening of all time. I just love that lo-fi crunchy bass-line. Next comes another awesome rocker, ANIMAL, and then PJ show off their soft side in DAUGHTER. I like DAUGHTER, but I find the how the vocal climax is directly followed by a guitar solo a little cliche, it's like someting new CREED would come up with. GLORIFIED G, what can I say...I don't like it. The music is a little annoying, but I find the lyrics pretty immature. Hey, even Eddie hates it! DISSIDENT has probably the most reconizable PJ intro. It's so bluesy I sometimes wonder whether Mike is playing a guitar or a trombone. WMA is uneventful, BLOOD is alright, nothing to get crazy over. I also noticed that the guitar during the verses sounds kind of like the SHAFT theme. I know it sounds crazy but...yea, it's crazy. RVM is an incredible rocker that really picks up at the end. It's a great song to blast while your doing 60mph in the 'burbs to impress yo homies. RATS...blah. If I could choose the one song that shows of how great a singer Eddie Vedder is, SMALL TOWN would be it. I mean this is the one PJ song where it is literaly Ed's show. I love it. LEASH is listenable, but uneventful, and INDIFERANCE is a soft closer that reminisiant of GARDEN, I believe.
So there you have it, PJ's VS. If you love music you'll buy it (or you already have it) and you'll enjoy it (or are enjoying it as we speak). Simple as that. If you are more of the "I like what get's played on MTV" type person, your in the wrong section, LINKIN PARK and LIMP BIZKIT are are on the other side of the cd rack. Enjoy.
nirvana better than pearl jam???????? hahaha, ok, I know how you feel... Well this album is really good, among the best songs are: Daughter, Leash, Go, Animal, Glorified G, Rats and of course... Dissident.
Nirvana is better.
Yå know?¿Waffles are on the car and fretwork is down the corner?¿
Okay, erect penis. Thank you, Captain Hard-on. Lets write that sentence. Meet me at the Drinking Well at 3:00am for tea. Sincerely, Mother Leopard.
If nothing else "Vs". was an indication that "grunge" or rather the sharp edge in the alternative sensation then the persavive trend in contemporary music could extend beyond the mere amplification appropriate for ritual of the slam dance at any given live appearance. If not then tracks such as "Daughter" and "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" could not succeed beyond the restrictions of its category. Yet they did and so therefore did Pearl Jam.
I think Vs is better than ten in my opinion. I'm not saying that ten isn't a great album but I think vs is just as goos 7 perhaps even better as theres alot more variety on this album and not really a poor song on it at all. Unfortunately from then on pearl jams albums have got worse and worse, so hpefully the new one will return to the high quality of both these two albums. Anybody who's a passing listner ten & vs are the only ones I wd advise getting if youre new to pearl jam. P.S. dont hurl abuse at me because i think vs is better than ten its just my opinion.
Nope.
But don't get me wrong, this album is quite good but Ten was just about perfect. Perfect for its time, perfect for its listeners and doesn't seem to age at all.
Vs. though, is also a great album and it more than deserves the rating of 5 that I gave it. I was originally brought to this album through hearing the songs "Daughter" and "Elderly Woman..", what I came to was another collection of great songs. Highlights of this album include "Rearviewmirror", "Glorified G", and my personal favorite, "Indifference".
I have only bought this CD and Ten so far and I plan to buy more Pearl Jam CDs but I find that you can spend a long time with just one Pearl Jam CD and hear new things out of it each time. For example, I'm still trying to uncover the song, "W.M.A". I'm not trying to say that there songs are hard to understand, but there are so many different levels of comprehension for each song.
It's a pity that this album might not get the attention it deserves being directly compaired to Ten but this album deserves the listed price and the prices of replacing the CD every few years in case you ever lose it.
No,this is not better than TEN
I do not know what took me so long to buy this album! This is my faviorate of the Pearl Jam collection. "Indifference" is such a great tune. But you can't go wrong with this whole album. Eddie if your out there go back to your roots brother, this is where its at.
For some reason, I have to disagree with most other Pearl Jam fans and say I think "Vs." is a better album than "Ten". I know, I know, this may be considered blasphemy to most, but I prefer to more edgy raw sound of this album to that of there debut. Don't get me wrong, I still love "Ten", I mean, with racks like "Jeremy", "Even Flow", "Black" and "Alive" how could you not? But overall I think "Vs." is a more complete album. "Animal" has got to be the ultimate adrenaline song!
This is definately one of my top 3 albums of all time, an amazing cd.
A great album every song sounds different and they all sound great. BUY THIS CD!!!!!
Okay, for those of you who didn't know, no you do. Pearl Jam's first two albums
"TEN" & "VS (5 AGAINST 1)" are the best Pearl Jam albums you can buy. Wait did I say Pearl Jam albums, I ment all time best albums. With the unreal lyrics, and vocals from one of the best ever Eddie Vedder. He's like a God in my books. All I really have to say is "DON'T HESITATE, BUY TODAY". And also check out the B-Side's off of these albums aswell. Whoa is all I can say.
Very underrated too, due to the fact that they stopped making music videos on this album and whenever PJ is brought up, "Ten" automatically comes to mind. Much harder than "Ten" but that's good though...has one of my top 3 fave PJ song's in "Animal"...
just as great! this album has a funk groove, rocks harder, and has more diversity than "ten". although it rocks hard, there is still songwriting genious and has both a folkish and a slow, beautiful ballad thrown in for diversity.
the drums on this album are amazing. Plus the guitar and lyrics. WOOOOW!
It's ok, Rearviewmirror is their best song.
