    Old Vs. New

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 23, 2007

Pros: Much more raw than "Ten"

    Cons: Still thinking...

Though most fans may deny it, I think somewhere in the back of their minds they thought Pearl Jam would fall victim to the "Sophomore Slump"...I know I did a little bit. Honestly, how do you follow up a debut release whose music partially d...efined the 90's and helped put Seattle music back on the map? Fortunately, for me anyway, they did with "Vs.". Don't get me wrong, I liked "Ten" - obviously enough to go to the store at midnight to pick up their next offering. But the spit-shined and polished production stifled the material there, where the raw sound of the band on "Vs." really allows the songs, and them, to shine without regressing. Even the lighter moments, like the folk-tinged "Indifference", the pop sensibility of "Glorified G", and the pure funk of "Rats" still has that D.I.Y., garage attitude. And the songs that rock, like "Animal", "Rearviewmirror"
;, and "Blood" rock hard without sounding inexperienced or immature. They knew what they were doing, and did it well. The spotlight track on this one is easily "Go". The urgency that is built both musically and lyrically (though it's rumored to be about Eddie's car) is slow, but steady. By the end of the song, however, you're screaming right along with every nerve engaged. Intense and fantastic. Considering their body of work, as a whole, it's difficult to pick a favorite album from this band. But if this release wasn't as strong as it was (and is), who knows where they would have gone?

    pearl jam at there best

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 9, 2005

Pros: everything is great about this cd!

Cons: none at this point in there career

this was a great follow up to there debut album ten.this was back at a point betweeen 91 and 95 that pearl jam was at there best.songs such as go,animal, and blood showing there heavier side. along with great acoustic based songs such as daughter and ...elderly woman showing a more stripped side of the band. along with everyone else back in 93 i couldnt wait for this cd to be released. eddie vedder to this day is still one of the best vocalists and pearl jam the most imitated bands of all time. people that are just discovering pearljam, should check out the first 3 albums 91 album ten...... 93 album vs and 94 album vitalogy. there 98 album yield is better then average and probaly there last really good cd. i would pass on no code.. and riot act. i will say what everyone else is thinking if pearl jam would go back to where they were between 91 and 95 they could still rule again. i really miss that era of music everything was so new and exciting.back when pearl jam were the kings. Classic...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 2, 2002

Okay, did someone down there compare PJ to f*cking Creed?!?! Buddy, the reason why Creed even has a record contract is because of the path Pearl Jam paved. Versus is not their best work, in fact it ranks fourth on my overall list of their studio al...bums. The thing is...one of their "albums that is not perfect" (i didn't want to say weak) is still better than anyone elses best. They are the survivors, the truth of that movement from which they were spawned. Listen to Nirvana...they are worshiped because they never conformed - then their music got boring, Kurt killed himself, and that was that. Everytime Eddie and company release an album they push aside trying to please fans...they do it for the music (THAT IS IT). In turn they have been rewarded by colaborating to produce some of the most influential and timeless pieces of music in the past 20 or more years. Versus with its earthy vibe and gorgeous acoutic feel (they recorded it in a cabin - no need for studio tricks to improve the best voice ever) is an album that speaks to both sexes on political revolution, loss, love, and cander towards humans. They matter. Not because they are anything more than human, but because they represent what people in their position did in th late '60s. The represent the listener and why things should be different. Read more Less

A nostalgic journey back to the world of

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 16, 2002

Everytime I listen to this albulm, I think back to the year it was released (1993) and how I was just a scrawny freshman in highschool, getting my ass kicked everyday by upperclassmen. Maybe not the best of times, but still a period of exploration fo...r a young man in his pre-adulthood. They same thing holds true for Pearl Jam's 2nd release "Vs." After their groundbreaking debut, they seem a little unsure of themselves and what to make of their newly-grunge pop audience. But they have all the elements present which vaulted them to fame first place, and for that, they don't dissapoint. Some incredible music of the grunge genre is present onthis CD, and tracks like "Daughter," "E.W.B.A.C.I.A.S.T" remind the listener of how unique and gifted Pearl Jam truly is. Some of the tracks are cluttered within the albulm, and they, much like an inside joke, seem to make little sense to anyone except the band. But songs like "Dissadent" "Go" and "Rearview Mirrow" (my favorite track on the albulm) show the fire that rocks within' the core that is Eddie Vedder. Read more Less

    Great Pearl Jam follow-up

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 9, 2002

This person before me doesn't deserve to be a Pearl Jam fan, if you think Ten is awesome, but think Vs. sucks! All of Pearl Jam's studio albums are great. They do not make a bad song. So i think you should take a second listen to Vs.
