Tech N9ne: Vintage Tech

Cons: Production on some songs below average
This album was released primarily to tide Tech N9ne fans over until Eveready: The Religion is released in the fall of '05. Eveready was supposed to be released in the fall of '04, then rescheduled till spring '05, and has been set back even further now. Vintage Tech has it's ups and downs. On the plus side it has many old "new" songs that have never seen the light of day on a Tech album. It is good to hear these songs so the fan can get an idea of what Tech was up to back in the day.
There are a few songs off of Anghellic, and Absolute Power, a remix, and a few brand new songs. Now the production of some of his "vintage" tracks is below average, and some of the beats are boring and overall sound cheap, but realize Tech is underground, and it's his style to be different than the norm. That is what helps him stand out in the crowd, and rise above many of his fellow rappers. If you want the good, you gotta take the bad. Interesting listen. Buy it. 3.5 outta 5 stars. Pro Reviews: Vintage Tech
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Vintage is not entirely the case on this compilation of early works and more recent endeavors from Kansas City rapper Tech N9ne. Tech's been down for a minute, trading verses with everyone from the mighty 2Pac to the real Slim Shady (although in a more casual sort of party that also included RZA, KRSOne, Xzibit and Kool G Rap on Sway King Tech's "The Anthem"). But despite these Billboardtopping friends, Tech ain't there just yet. Cut's like "Monster" just aren't ready for primetime while the captivating "S.H.E." is a nearpsychopathic spoken word where Tech obsesses over a dancer, "I left my mic for you, my wife for you/I miss you so I'm sitting outside the club every night for you." And no, it doesn't have a happy ending. But this disc does; it's a happy find for longtime fans who would rather have vintage Tech than patiently wait for his next fulllength full of hardcore sniping, ominous subjects and club bangers like "Victory" which, despite its earnest attempt at mainstream funk and Luda ready lines like "Cause your momma got a big old butt, and your sister got a big old butt/Since your momma and your sister got a big old butt they helped the niner bust a nut," can't avoid the melancholy horns and disquieting choruses. So Tech N9ne stays below the mainstream, but not below the radar. - Joshua Glazer, All Music Guide |
