Vincent Van Gogh is famous for selling only one painting in his own lifetime and for slicing off part of his own ear in a fit of madness. But as this intimate look at the artist reveals, there was much more to the man. Van Gogh's surprisingly honest and eloquent letters to his brother provide the narration (as read by the masterly actor John Hurt), and they allow this critically acclaimed film to effectively explore Van Gogh's turbulent inner life. Gifted filmmaker Paul Cox intersperses vivid images of the places Van Gogh lived and worked with the artist's own sketches and paintings, creating a fascinating, insightful tribute to one of art's most extraordinary figures.

A Glimpse Into the Life of Van Gogh

    Pros: More than a documentary

Cons: Need to be undisturbed to watch

This documentary is not the typical reenactement of an artists life. We are given a very personal tour of what it was to be Vincent Van Gogh. Through a series of letter written to Van Gogh's brother Theo we are given the perspective so intimately... portrayed be the voice of John Hurt. Not only do we hear the thoughts but also are shown nature scenes and visuals of what this tortured artist saw. The life of Van Gogh was not the wonder it is today but was truly horrible. From the time he turned away from being a preacher and God his life seemed to go downhill. He was so desperate for companionship that he even took in a pregnant prostitute with the thought of making this woman his bride. This film truly gives us the perspective of a soul thats only comfort was through apinting. We see how his skills develope through sketches in his letters to his final pieces. I really enjoyed this film. I thought I could feel some of the emotiions of a long ago artist. Read more Less
