Pro Reviews: Very Best of the Platters [Collectables]

  • All Music Guide

The Very Best of the Platters from Collectables duplicates the same title and sequence as the Polygram Special Markets release from 1997, collecting ten tracks from the group's 1950s stay at Mercury Records. Although there are some wonderful cuts here, including "My Prayer," "It's Raining Outside," and the elegant "Twilight Time," this brief compilation is probably more defined by what it doesn't include, like "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Great Pretender," or "Only You," all of which were among the Platters' biggest hits. As a quick, cursory sampler of the group, The Very Best of the Platters works fine, but any but the most casual listener will want a broader look at this important group.

The Platters

The Platters started out as a Los Angelesbased doo wop group with little identity of their own to make them stand out from the pack. They made their first records for Federal, a subsidiary of Cincinnati's King Records. These early sides don't sound anything like the betterknown sides that would eventually emerge from this group, instead merely aping the current RB trend... Read more
