Pros: All the best in one neat package...

Cons: Is a re-release really that necessary?

The Police has always been one of the definitive bands that emerged in the 70s and gained prominence in the 80s. With hits like the classic "Every Breath You Take", the infectious "Don't Stand So Close To Me", and the catchy &...quot;De Do Do Do De Da Da Da", this band is an adult contemporary music station staple. When Sting pursued a solo career later in the 80s, he is capable of producing his own hits, earning him critical-acclaim and his own slew of Grammys. Some of his signature tunes are "Fields of Gold", "Fragile", "If Ever I Lose My Faith In You". All of which are featured in this re-release of their greatest hits in 2002. Not to be missed in this collection is my personal favorite "When We Dance" which appears as an edited version. In the late 90s, he released the smash singles, "Brand New Day" and "Desert Rose" with the latter featuring the Middle Eastern vocal acrobatics of Cheb Mami. This 78-minute CD chronicles Sting's illustrious career like a time capsule. With all honesty, this album is worth every hard-earned cent for any collector. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Very Best of Sting & the Police [2002]

  • All Music Guide

In the summer of 1997, Puff Daddy took "I'll Be Missing You," a sappy reworking of "Every Breath You Take," to the top of the charts across the world; it became the biggest rap single in history. The success of "I'll Be Missing You" had the bizarre by-product of making the Police hip again among both rock and rap artists. So, what better to celebrate the occasion -- as well as the 20th anniversary of the Police's first album -- than the release of another compilation, this time combining highlights from the Police and Sting's solo career? The Very Best of Sting the Police does just that, compiling 14 songs in a seemingly random chronological order. the Police cuts are generally classics, but there are several big hits left off, which should probably be expected from an integrated collection like this. There's plenty of good music on Sting's solo records, but the selection here emphasizes his MOR side instead of some of his more ambitious material. Obviously, that selection is designed... to snag a mature, 30-something audience. While it's hard to ignore the fact that this disc isn't necessary, the music itself is good, and certain casual fans may find this useful. But anyone following Sting or the Police for any length of time will find The Very Best Of... superfluous. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Sting

After disbanding the Police at the peak of their popularity in 1984, Sting quickly established himself as a viable solo artist, one obsessed with expanding the boundaries of pop music. Sting incorporated heavy elements of jazz, classical, and worldbeat into his music, writing lyrics that were literate and selfconsciously meaningful, and he was never afraid to emphasize ... Read more
