Pros: nice tracklisting
Cons: the end of the CD is a bit strange
very good selections but 4 songs from diamonds and pearls? that makes no sense. Money don't matter 2night was the only necessary track from that album. there's practically nothing from sign o times. otherwise this is a good best of. but if u like prince go for the albums u won't be disappointed
Pros: Awesome Music To Dance TO:)
Cons: NONE
AWESOME CD:) I LOVE ALL THE SONGS ON THIS CD:)
these are some of the best hits so why wouldn't they be good? It's Prince!
This album must be great...I know that, even though I didnt buy it. I have the "The Hits/The B-Sides" 3 Cd set from Prince and it has his greatest works on it. This CD contains maybe 2-3 songs that aren't on the 3 cd set. But believe me...."The Hits/The B-Sides" is WAY BETTER than this. And...a comment to those who use this review section instead of using much-needed anger management....Please lets just use this for strictly reviews. Your petty comments and accusations are filth. Some people dont like Prince, and some are big fans of most of his work but dislike some of his other stuff. Lets accept the fact that we are all different and this review is for opinions. Thanks!
I read his books when I was 17, but hell yeah, a redneck would never be able to do that, so forget about that accusation.
And I didn' t know you were b/ w, your yahoo- pic won' t load, but judging from some of your arrogant("Mr. German", just hate it when Americans feel they' re the centre of the Universe, they' re not, especially in cultural terms)and self- profilic comments, I think it was pretty reasonable to call you that way.
I know my English is not that perfect (I' d really like to prefer to chat in French), I just hope you get the information I want to get across. At least you seem to take our little competition that important that you took the time to nearly write a novel, really appreciate it...and I don' t feel any anger at all, what do you mean, from the first post it was you who started those horribly insulting judgements. They don' t hurt me at all, you don' t know how wrong you are.
So you really want to know about my musical preferences? There are too many (you could check out my homepage www.christianmack.com for my favourite music, novels, etc.), but okay. Genrally, I' m into more abstract, unique, often electronic stuff like Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Radiohead, Laurie Anderson, Mr. Bungle, Autechre, Silver Mt Zion Orchestra, late 70s David Bowie but I also cherish the more organic side of music like Eric Satie, Samuel Barber, Bill Evans, Keith Jarret, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Richard Galliano (tango!), Astor Piazzolla, Chick Corea, Tom Waits, Miles Davis of course, George Benson, Gustav Mahler (those seem to be pretty obvious choices, but honestly, those are still my absolute favourites). And, as you might already guess, Prince, as well as Pharcyde, De La Soul, Marvin Gaye, early 70s Stevie Wonder. And even Depeche Mode, Peter gabriel or Nirvana have much more to offer than A- HA, ABC or Heaven 17, which in Germany only 13- olds are listening to.
To me those bands are just slick, pretentious nonsense without substance or honesty. Music that was only produced to make cash, just like N' Sync or Britney Spears.
Cannot stand it.
I know that Tina Turner has made some relevant soul records, I just hope you don' t dig her horrible 80s pop crap.
And to your information: Yes, I' m a student, and although I have pretty wealthy parents, I try not to depend too much on them, and as you seem to compare our IQs, etc. all the time, in two years time I' ll have 90 people working under my supervision. Honestly. Either that, or I' ll take the artistic route which still needs some development, don' t know yet...
For those unfamiliar with this confrontation, see the listing for the Prince Black Album
A "Mere" assistant office manager? I have a staff of seventeen working under my direct supervision. Be aware that I don't mean ordering office supplies here, but coordinating operations between nine other large departments within the orginization. At least I am making money rather than being a financial drain on my family or the government as you must be. And the ease at which I go about my job leaves plenty of time for Proust, Joseph Campbell and Sartre , as well as my own personal musical, literal and athletic pursuits. This is not a job I plan on toiling away at for the remaining 60 or so years of my life, to be assured.
As for ABC, A-Ha, Tina Turner, and so forth being "transparent", I am not putting any forth as being particularly important in the grand scheme of things. Notable pop voices like Tina Turner's, and the late Billy Mackenzie, speak for themselves in terms of their importance, however, even if the music that accompanies them is not always equal to the task. Some music can be listened to on a more emotional than analytical level. The music of some of these "favorite" groups of mine is often formulaic, but at least it is their own respective formulae, ones they started and have followed for a time, rather than the plastic boy band / Madonna / Britney, tired R&B, or Seattle alt-rock sounds that are the main stylistic choices these days. Try actually listening to something (the whole album, not just the online sound samples) before you offer an opinion. I believe that is a reasonable expectation. In your case it is not, however. Your often crude choice of words, whatever the depth of your actual opinion or intelligence, show you in an unfavorable light. Speak in a civilized manner, and the responses will be in kind.
As for the direct e-mail you sent, it is a privilege you have misused, and my Yahoo! page has been changed accordingly. The "Mr. Redneck" comment is uproarious; I am biracial (black and white), educated, live in the northern midwest of the US near the nation's third largest city, and have very liberal political alignments. Further from a redneck I could not be. Come to this country and travel through Georgia or Alabama or any other southern or plains state (and dye your skin so it is my shade of brown or darker), and maybe you will find the meaning of the word. Until then, just shut up on the subject of race or appearance. A white man such as yourself knows nothing of facing discrimination.
How about revealing your own lofty (according to you) musical preferences? I have not had a good laugh since I read your new posting just now. Just because I don't list Miles Davis, John Coltrane, or Oliver Nelson among my favorites doesn't mean I am not quite familiar with their works. Unlike Julian Lennon, I am a child of professional musicians who DOES know something about music. Listening to a lot of music does not guarantee a deep knowledge of all music, but actually writing and getting paid to sing some songs (as I have in a couple of Chicago jazz clubs) shows more ability than just firing empty words from 'round Bavaria Vay, which seems to be all you are capable of. All this anger! I feel sorry for you, having no release other than this one message board. Get another hobby, or just get some sleep. And last time I checked, admitting nothing, being self-centered is not a crime (You are an example of that). Being an altruistic doer of good deeds is something I am fairly certain you could not be accused of. Look in a mirror, and then make your evaluations of others.
My one small offhanded remark (which was, jokingly, "He's German, what do you expect?" - recall that I said nothing else that was derogatory) from nearly nine hundred days ago, and look at all the vitriol that has come, most of it from you. I would write more, but the laughter over the folly of this whole exchange has my sides a
Warner Bros. are such a bunch of *ssholes for releasing this without Prince's permission!!.. don't buy this album and make them richer.. buy Prince's new album, THE RAINBOW CHILDREN and support the real deal!!
I'm a true Prince fan and if you are too you know some of his best stuff wasn't out as singles. This is a decent collection of his songs so I do recommend it. I have every album that he ever made so there was no need for me to purchase it. I also suggest you get the collection with the b-sides cause even if you have all of his albums, these are the ones that didn't make it on albums.Enjoy this one
Where are "7", "Delirious" and "Pop Life"?
He should've added a lot more songs. And I mean a lot. But he still has his talent.
Ya'll ain't no true prince fans. Now this is the very best songs of Prince. Purple Rain, Thieves in the Temple, U Got tha look, peach, cream. All these songs on the list is what made Prince. Damn, he might had a lousy, no good manager but damn he did get paid. Hell, he wrote the songs and play majority of the music his self. This album is the best, everyone of these songs are listenable. Buy this album and I guaranteed you will love it. Satisfaction guaranteed!
i am a young prince fan, and even i know that these R not his best song's.
KEEP WELL AWAY FROM THIS. A cunning plot from Warner Bros. to get a last payday from the genius that is Prince. Non-fans can buy it, but this is no way the very best of Prince. Where's 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man'? Where's 'Pop Life'? Where's 'Batdance'? Where's 'Controversy'? See what I'm getting at? And also the fact that he made a 'Hits/B-sides' collection makes it worse. An absoulute joke.
Forget those money hungry bastards at WB. Support the REAL Prince not some jerks in suits and ties flaunting a legend's music that they know nothing about. Download CYBER-SINGLE and WHEN WILL WE B PAID from his web site...both awesome. Can't wait for his new stuff.
All I want to know is WHO picked these songs? They are good, but Prince's best....not by a long shot!
This is a good album for the non prince fan, but a bit of a con by WB, theyre only in it for the money.
First I'd like 2 say that the cd IS a good idea. Who cares who released it? And how much cash Prince got 4 it. It's not about $ for the musicians isit? I 4 1 hope not.
The reason I think it is a good idea is because over here in the UK the album charted at number 2. Dunno about n e where else.
The highest 4 a Prince album in bloody years!
Which shows that Prince STILL has a fanbase.
People still want 2 hear his (our) music.
So Prince - record more stuff and gett it out m8e!
Laterzzz............
So what if WB released it? It's the MUSIC that matters 2nite.
Buy the $40 3 cd greatest hits collection. It's got all of the songs that this one does and has hard to find B-sides like "17 days", and everybodies favorite "Erotic City".
The only thing that it doesn't have is "Baby I'm a Starr" but if you get the Purple Rain Soundtrack you'll get that song and "Darling Nicki", the song that prompted Tipper Gore (Al's wife) to press for a parental warning labels through Congress.
Where is Gold? I Hate U? Most Beautiful Girl? Playes frequently on the radio. Warner Bros. Are in this 4 the $$
If they only released extended versions which are rare on CD It would've been perfect...
They have the rights 2 those dont they??????
... now if Warners (or Prince for that matter) released a concise DVD collection - with additional concert clips etc. - that would be worth the investment. But this 'The Very Best Of Prince'?, a great intro album for those that may have missed it the first time... but not for us old timers, what's the point. And again, only Kiss from Parade, again no Paisley Park (come on!), again nothing from Batman, then it stops at 92... perhaps they should have called it 'The Best Of Warners' as this is by no means Prince's best. x.
A great way to attract new fams, a great way to attract new publicity, but a poor album for Prince fams who will have all these songs. A Special edition format would be ideal with never released before material, mixes or live material! This is what we really want!
I think prince should use this album to his advantage to promote his upcoming album.
We all know that whatever he has released in the past 4 years ain't nothing to write home about. Money don't matter when it comes to prince making anything out of this one because he has not made much from his previous few releases anyway.
I will buy it only if the trax have been remastered. If they are not then its just a worthless set for Prince Fams.
this is just another way for warner bros. to make more money off of prince.they already released a hits album that was three discs, two of which you could buy individually. whats the point of them releasing another? NONE!!! to warner bros. its all about the $$$
not the music. this a pointless album. plus this was never talked about with prince, the artist of all of the music on this album, so once again i say that it is WORTHLESS TO BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!
It's useless if Ur a Prince fan and have all thse collections. If you dont want to buy the 40 $$ collection also its definitley a good scource
