Krall's 'Very Best Of' Not Her Best...Yet

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 21, 2007

Pros: Being her first hits collection, Krall, and her label execs put together a respectable compilation of her work.

Cons: There could have been many other songs put in this compilation in the place of others.

Best of. Greastest Hits. When one reads these words on an "album", what does one think? The first thing that comes to most peoples' minds is, 'Oh God, not again." Why? Because in most cases, those "greatest hits" coll...ections are nothing but singles compilations archived by faceless record execs. This is a trend that spans every genre in the music industry, even the jazz world. Diana Krall's very first "hits" compilation is proof positive of this fact. Krall is among the most talented musicians in the world of jazz, or in the world for that matter. All of her works are impressive from beginning to end. But now, she has become the newest victim of the "hits" compilation space filler curse. That is what "greatest hits" compilations are; they are a space filler used primarily--if not solely--for the intention of fulfilling a contractually mandated number of releases for a record label. The songs on this album are enjoyable. This should not be misunderstood. But as any fan of any genre would agree, "greatest hits" are, like beauty, in the eye of the beholder. There are so many more tracks that could have been put on to this release, but were sadly omitted. That being the case, this is one of those albums that openly serves as an argument for the purchase of an iPod, Zune, or other MP3 player. For those hardcore fans of Krall, and her work, this is an enjoyable addition to your libraries. But for more casual fans of Mrs. Krall (Costello by marriage; yes she is marred to the one and only Elvis Costello, and even has twins by him), one would od better to probably purchase favorite tracks online and add to your digital music library, rather than buy the entire album. • All Music Guide

The Very Best of Diana Krall collects a nice crosssection of tracks the pianist/vocalist recorded beginning with her 1996 breakthrough album All For You and moving through to her 2006 effort From This Moment On. These are largely urbane and stylish recordings that range from her intimate and swinging trio work with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Christian McBride to her lush orchestral and big band numbers. While this is primarily a compilation for fans of the sophisticated, jazz standardsoriented Krall, Verve does earn some kudos for including at least one cut from her deeply personal and subsequently not as popular effort The Girl In The Other Room. Also featured are cuts from her stellar 2002 concert album Live in Paris. If you are fan of straightahead jazz with a heavy dash of romance and haven't checked out Krall's work, The Very Best is superb place to start.

Biography

Diana Krall

Singer/pianist Diana Krall got her musical education when she was growing up in Nanaimo, British Columbia, from the classical piano lessons she began at age four and in her high school jazz band, but mostly from her father, a stride piano player with an extensive record collection. "I think Dad has every recording Fats Waller ever made," she said, "and I tried to learn ... Read more
