Pro Reviews: Very Best of Robert Palmer

  • All Music Guide

Despite my (yet rationalized) fondness for his 1980 electro-pop hit "Johnny and Mary" (included here), the 16-track collection The Very Best of Robert Palmer mostly leaves me cold. Palmer has the tools, but the mechanicals lack potency and soul. Still, if combining mid-'80s hits like "Addicted to Love" and "Simply Irresistible" with a whiff of earlier material, several more recent constructions, and a pair from side project the Power Station sounds like your kind of fun, this disc does the job...efficiently. Includes a new cover of the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself."

By the mid'80s, however, Palmer became a star, although his p... Read more
