This Type of Thinking Did Us In

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 25, 2007

    Pros: Contract Fulfillment

Cons: Forgotten roots lead to this result: Tiresome Meaningless Mediocrity

After listening to the Vena Sera album for the first time, I noticed some things have changed with Chevelle. No longer do they reflect what they once were. "To forsake from where you have come, causes you to miss where you are going." The l...ong awaited album seemed to be full of disappointments; the lack of the gear driving punch heard in past works, and most importantly, decent lyrics. Many reviews of this album reveal Chevelle to be a pseudo Tool or Deftones sounding band with this new album. The fact is that that they have always sounded similar to others, but where Chevelle’s uniqueness in style came in was adequately matching their “in-your-face” type of lyrics with aggressive riffs that generated emotion, motivation, and a sense of urgency. Past works have reflected a steady process and increase of those qualities, but seem to be absent in their newest release. This is probably why the band is being deemed a “copy-cat” of other originals. Read more Less

A solid album for the band, but it could be better

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 7, 2007

Pros: Several memorable songs. Lyrics that make you think.

Cons: Many songs are forgettable and lack the spirit of the band.

I'll keep this short and sweet: I am a big fan of Chevelle, so I was really looking forward to this new album. I am somewhat disappointed with the album, though. Several of the songs, such as "The Fad" and "I Get It" show that... the band has indeed grown since we last heard from them. However, songs like "Paint the Seconds" and "Midnight to Midnight" sound bland, and are barely distinguishable from one another. You get the feeling that songs like that were used as cd fillers. (Try this - load both of the previously mentioned songs into a play list. Skip to the middle of each song and listen for a few seconds - there is very little difference) The lyrics are what you would expect from Chevelle: mysterious, full of emotion, and sung with passion. All in all, I give the album 4/5 stars. Good job, Chevelle, but you guys can do much better. Read more Less

"Vena Sera" Taking Chevelle In The Right Direction

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 6, 2007

Pros: The band's sound has changed somewhat with this album.

Cons: While it has changed, the sound still has room to grow.

It has been two or three years since fans of Chevelle have heard anything from this band. Whether it was the touring or other events, many fans wondered if the band would put out a new album. Now, on their fourth studio release (and fifth overall wit...h their first live record) Chevelle has finally eased their fans' waiting with an album that can't help but make one think. It is a good album, but at the same time, it is nothing outstanding. It is not an album that fans will remember years down the road as a standout record. But it will be one that will be at least relatively enjoyable. This release is enjoyable in that while it still maintains the sound the helped them hit it big with their major label debut, "Wonder What's Next", it has a different sound from that album and both their very first record, "Point #1" and their third record, "This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)." When Vhevelle first broke out, they could have very easily been compared to the likes of Breaking Benjamin. And "This Type of Thinking........." did little to sever that comparison. This record has helped at least a little to start separating them from that comparison. That is obvious from the album's opening track, "Antisaint", in which vocalist Peter Loeffler sounds eerily like (Tool frontman) Maynard James Keenan. And the music combined with that makes the song sound very similar to both Tool and Keenan's other band, A Perfect Circle. That is not the only change. "I Get It" soudns very similar to the lead single from Finger Eleven's new album, "Paralyzer." It is almost an identical copy of said song. The only real link to the band's previous work on this record comes in "Well Enough Alone." It sounds very simlar to "Send The Pain Below" from their 2005 release, "This Type of Thinking............"
; There are other good songs on this album including "Saferwaters" and "The Fad" taht definitely show the changes in the band' sound on this release. The only major downside of this album is the lyrics book. The lyrics were printed in a way that make it difficult in some points to understand what is being sung. "Vena Sera" is a good album, and takes the band in a slightly different direction. It is not a directly different direction, but it is a hopeful sign that they are finally headed in the right diretion.

    New Chevelle

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 5, 2007

Pros: The guys are improving their talents everyday.

Cons: The songs have the same sound but that's not always a bad thing.

The Chevelle brothers have stepped up their game with the latest album, Vena Sera, proving that they are in this for the long haul. Pete's vocals are stretching the limits and his guitar playing rocks. Sam and Dean throw down as well. Their image... is a little darker these days which is reflected in the tunes. I thought the sound resembled a little Tool and Deftones action (not to compare but just saying). Chevelle have always done their own thing and that makes them one of my favorite bands.
