as much as i like this album i think that i prefer white light/white heat.i think if they used the same sort of dark images on the album cover and back bit like they did with white light/white heat then the images would go with the music, and perhaps ...if they had only 6 songs on it 1.im waiting for the man2.run run run3.venus in furs4.black angels death song5.european son6.heroin the rest of the songs would go better with their third album Read more Less

A great debut for a great band

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 26, 2002

This predates every punk record ever and they made it ok for their to be tabu topics for songs. Heroin is a great song, so is Im waiting for the man and venus in furs. It's sad that some people may never hear this record, but if you get a chance you ...have to listen to it.The velvet underground have influenced ever great band over the years. to Mike0870uk & foot_of_pride

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 8, 2001

Both of you are in many ways correct, and are also the only two worthy of a response on this page.I agree with Mike0870uk in the sense that, it indeed is impossible to deny the influence of this band. Also, I agree with anyone that says that Lou Ree...d's synical, angry, real life poetry is magical in it's rage. The mind of this man worked in more simplistic, straight forward, yet important and meaningful ways. That said, foot_of_pride is certainly correct in saying that the sound of this record, the music itself, is ugly, and that sound is not necessarily what I would consider great music, though many others would, and should if that is what they like. I am no more musically intelligent than the next individual, and for anyone to excrete on any artist is truely unfair. But, all of that said, the albums ugly sound does make it difficult to listen to, plus, many are turned off by the realities of the world. People would love to keep all skeletons in all closets for all of eternity.I praise the poetry of Lou Reed. I do not praise the sound of the music. Influential they were, but the Velvet Underground is a difficult album for the average music listener, not because they don't get it, but because they don't want to.Also, to compare Bob Dylan and Lou Reed is a bit difficult. They were both pied piper's in a sense, with similar messages delivered in different styles. To dismiss either of them as poets is to spit in the face of art. Give them both credit, and leave out the comparison's. They are not exactly the most appropriate of criticisms when the difference of the two is acknowledged.I give the album a 3 based on great real life poetry depicting the reality of street life in a large city. These lessons need to be learned and need to be seen by the mainstream public. It only receives a three based upon an ugly sound that is difficult to listen to. Many of you will not like this, and I understand your arguement. I suppose it would sound ridiculous if this great ugly synical poetry was accompanied by polished pop sounding instrumentation. The ugliness of the music matches the poetry. This is why I say give me the poetry to read, do not subject me to the sounds. Perhaps I am just like the rest, and would like to hide the ugliness, but I will not discredit this albums own sense of beauty. Read more Less

You're not a very open minded person if you gave the velvet Underground's debut album a low rating because if you hear this album, you hear how influential it became. It's one of rock's core albums. With the street wise lyrics of Lou Reed, the haunti...ng voice of the Late Nico, the distinctive drumming of Moe Tucker, and the brilliant arrangement of Jonn Cale, this album captures a moment in time that very few albums have done. From the dremy "Sunday Morning" to the wonderful chaos of "European Son",the Velvets not only made one of the best 6o's albums, but one of the best of all time. Read more Less

    The most significant album....

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 21, 2001

...of the last 35 years? Without a doubt, it's this one. This was actually released the same year as that other bastion of influence...The Beatles Srgt. Peppers album. Whereas Srgt. Pepper made an immediate impact, this album crept in slowly. I think... it was Brian Eno who said that not many people bought this album, but everyone who did formed bands of their own. You can't listen to modern, alternative, grunge, punk or any other form of rock'n'roll that is not mainstream and NOT hear the influence of this album. This was the second coming of rock'n'roll. We are still waiting for the third. Read more Less

    The Best Ever

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 12, 2001

I wish I'd never heard of the Velvet Underground just so I could rediscover them. I remember when I first heard these songs-it blew me away. I'm only fifteen, and I got it. Now they are my favorite band, and this is my favorite album. Bands from ...Nirvana to the Sex Pistols, Counting Crows and Sheryl Crow to Mott the Hoople and R.E.M have all been influenced by this awesome band, and you absolutely have to hear them for yourself.
