    Pros: great acting

Cons: were there any? Oh yeah the ending

Alright, I definately love the movie. The trailers and advertising really don't give it the justice it deserves. Van Helsing comes up against the evil Dracula that not even he can kill at first. The movie is also filled with other know villians t...hroughout literature which was a surprise. Definately a movie worth seeing over and over. The more you watch it the more little things you pick on. The only thing I can think of that I didnt care much for was the ending. It was just unexpected the way it ended but I wont give it away...you just have to watch it! Read more Less

    Awesome flick

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 19, 2004 | 2 out of 2 found this Van Helsing (2004) review helpful

Pros: Everything was just monstrously spectacular. :-D

Cons: Nothing that I know of. Maybe if the flick was a little more deeper and frightening, it might've been better? :-P

Oh man. What a flick this was, once I saw the trailer....There was so much excitement in me that I couldn't wait to watch it. When I finally got to go see it with my wife, we LOVED it period! It rocked! Blew us away by how marvelous the special e...ffects portrayed alongside the film's storyline and characters. Loved the weaponary that Van Helsing used to kick some ass! :-D Sure hope that Van Helsing 2 will come out, and Stephen Sommers is a rising star director whose movie credit always involves special effects which is a MUST for entertainers and moviegoers. Keep up the good job, Mr. Sommers!I am a proud owner of the DVD and I actually bought BOTH different dvds to keep for values, ha ha. Hey!When will Mummy 3 come out? Pretty Please soon? :-) Read more Less

Pros: Very good story and acting

Cons: Poor animation and fight scenes

Very good story line. I am a collector of vampire movies and this one was pretty good. I liked the way it included other fantasy monsters into the story. Overall it was a cute movie and I plan to buy the video. Lots of action but you will find the f...ight scenes are jumbled and move too fast to be seen, probably to hide the poor animation. It could have been better but it was good enough to be fun. Read more Less

    Silly, but Fun

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 3, 2006

    Pros: Eye Candy

Cons: Silly plot, poorly done special effects

Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. Were it not for these two gifted performers, this movie would be beyond silly. As it is, the plot is almost pretextual for the special effects. The Eye Candy factor is high, though. Hugh Jackman as the tortured hero..., filmed in the dark all of the time, makes us weak in the knees. Kate Beckinsale does magnificent physical feats while squeezed into a corset. The story: Van Helsing (Jackman) is essentially a bounty hunter of supernatural monsters, a job he took on at the request of the church as apparent penitence for sins he cannot even remember. As a reward for his centuries of service, he hopes to make his way to Heaven instead of Hell. Anna (Kate Beckinsale) is the last survivor of a family of Transylvanian vampire hunters. Her brother has become a werewolf and she is conflicted about whether he should live or die. Naturally Anna and Van Helsing team up to rid Transylvania of the evil vampire overlord. Van Helsing has a tool kit Batman would envy, and Anna maintains an arsenal of monster-killing weapons that would make a survivalist proud. Between the two of them, the monsters don't stand a chance. Put your mind on hold, suspend disbelief and intolerance for the occasional leap of reason, enjoy a slightly randy friar (Van Helsing's sidekick), and go along for the ride. Van Helsing is a great Sunday afternoon video. Read more Less

The One Name They All Fear

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 10, 2006

    Pros: Awards: 2 wins & 13 nominations

    Cons: Runtime: 132 min

I personally love this kind of tongue-in-cheek, change of the usual film. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was that, as was Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Plot Summary for Van Helsing (2004): During the late 19th century, famed monster hunte...r Dr. Gabriel Van Helsing (Jackman) heads to Eastern Europe to battle with Count Dracula (Roxburgh), the Wolf Man (Kemp), and Frankenstein's Monster (Hensley). By his side is the ravishing Anna (Beckinsale), a member of a family committed to ridding the world of evil. One of the famous quotes from the movie is: Frankenstein's Monster: Let me go! Carl: Where are you going to go? I don't know if you've looked in the mirror lately, but you kind of stick out in a crowd. MPAA: Rated PG-13 for nonstop creature action violence and frightening images, and for sensuality. Runtime: 132 min Country: USA / Czech Republic Language: English / Latin Color: Color Sound Mix: SDDS / DTS / Dolby Digital Trivia for Van Helsing (2004): Before David Wenham was cast as Carl, Paul Hogan was reportedly considered for the role. Originally planned in 1994 as a direct sequel to Dracula (1992) with Anthony Hopkins to reprise the title role. After it was pushed back, many story elements were changed. Hugh Jackman had hair extensions added for filming. During filming, Hugh Jackman accidentally broke an extra's hand. The second-to-last scene of X2 (2003) (Cyclops, Wolverine, and Professor X discussing Jean Grey) was filmed while Hugh Jackman had a day off from this movie. So that the production company can hold certain rights to the character, the original character from the Dracula series Abraham Van Helsing was changed to the new 'kid brother' Gabriel Van Helsing instead. Director Stephen Sommers claimed in an interview he changed the main character's name from Abraham Van Helsing to Gabriel Van Helsing, as he did not think he could have a lead character named Abraham. The Irishman who wrote Dracula, Bram Stoker, named the character after himself - Bram being a shortening of Abraham. The role of Igor was written specifically for Stephen Sommers's friend and frequent collaborator 'Kevin J. OConnor. The opening sequence recalls the original sequence from Frankenstein (1931) in which The Monster is brought to life, right up until Dracula shows up to talk with Viktor. Cans delivering the film to theaters were labeled "The Vatican Detective". Dr. Frankenstein's lab was equipped with antique medical equipment purchased on eBay. While the film is an homage to the 1930s and '40s Universal Monster horror films, the inclusion of Mr. Hyde is an oddity, as he was never one of the Universal Monster roster. Instead, the films based on Hyde during that time were made for Universal's rival MGM. However, in 1953, Universal did feature the monster in the comedy Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953). Dracula's diminutive henchmen, the Dwerger, are actually trolls from Germanic folklore. Among the most direct references to the original Universal horror films is the use of the Werewolf Poem which was created for the original The Wolf Man (1941) and quoted in every subsequent Universal film featuring that creature. The character of Igor is also clearly based upon Ygor from Son of Frankenstein (1939) and The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), though he also exhibits personality traits of Fritz from the original Frankenstein (1931) and Renfield from the original _Dracula (1931/I)_ . A scene where Dracula grabs a cross which bursts into flames is almost identical to a scene in Universal's remake of Dracula (1979). Read more Less
