Pros: Has a clear message: the government should be afraid of its people
Cons: none
The graphics were insanely good with this movie. It is based on a comic which is why the graphics and some of the subject matter seem somewhat fantasy-like. But don't let the fact that it was a comic book fool you.
This movie deals with the issue of a dictatorship, remincent of the Nazi regime and how important it is to stand up for what is right. And that the people shouldn't forget that they have the right to topple a government that has become unresponsive or hurtful to its own people. It is clear that some of the points in the movie are jabs at the current Bush administration.
"Remember, remember the 5th of November". The main character is V who wears the mask of Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up the British parliament in 1605. Even though the main character wears a mask throughout the entire movie, the actor still gives the many emotions across and you almost forget it is a mask.
The DVD edition has many extra features which allow you to learn more about the real backstory and about the comic book.
I highly recommend this movie to everyone!!! :)
Pros: content, relevance, musical score, N. Portman
Cons: Oversimplification
This movie would only be something I enjoyed in seeing some pot-shots taken at the Bush - Sutler and Rove - Macredy sort of analogy being played out in the new Bush/neocon fear tactics for control of people taking place in America, but as so many right-wingnuts are going ballistic over this thing, maybe there is some real truth in it we dont quite see yet. When something is close to revealing a real situation then the people trying to hide it come out screaming against in most cases, so rightwingers, best maybe you dont go to crazy over this film, whatdoya think?
Pros: The Foundation for this movie was terrific!
Cons: The ending didn't match the start or middle
Good stuff, very good movie through and through. Moved along well, and great acting all around. Rebel! Always Rebel! lol
Pros: Powerful, Moving
Cons: Sound
I absolutely loved it! The plot, the characters, the setting, everything was awesome! It was very thought provoking and entertaining at the same time. The only problem I had with it, is that I really had to strain to hear & understand some of the conversations. Part of that could be that I'm not used to the accent, but I felt the sound could have been clearer. I highly recommend this movie! It's a keeper!
Pros: Excellent plot, Memorable quotes, Can happen anywhere
Cons: It's not that easy in life !!
I didn't see this movie in the cinema, but i definetly should have, i really missed alot ... from the poster it looked like one of those comic characters made into a movie, but the reality is something else ... The films starts in London in the near future by a guy wearing a mask trying to blow up the Houses of Parliment ... when you go into the film you discover that this guy isn't a criminal or a terrorist, but in fact a freedom fighter trying to show the people that they have lost their free will for more security (happens now) ... he wears the mask of Guy Fawkes the man killed while trying to do the same thing 400 years ago as sign of protest against the King !! The plot then reveals the conspiracy hidden from the people and known only to the President and some of his people who have benefited much from this state and made much power & fortune ... He goes spreading the word: Remember, Remember the 5th of November as a date to end this oppression and free the poeple, just if the people had the will ...
It's a worldwide message for all the oppressed nations to rise ... You CAN make a difference !!!!
Pros: A powerful and thought-provoking adventure.
Cons: The plot lacks narritive exposition.
"Remember, remember the 5th of November, the Gunpowder Treason and plot; I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot." England constitutes a fascist regime to unite the country dissolved into chaos after a lethal virus devastates the world. One man dares to defy the iron grip of his totalitarian society; a shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V". There are points within the timeline where the characters have to spell out what has happened in order to further the plot; however, the film is about a lot more than explosions, mesmerizing action and witty dialogue - it spawns provocative thought.
Pros: An engaging story, great characters, historical reference, and a positive message.
Cons: Don't hold your breath for a sequel...
'V For Vendetta' is based off a series of graphic novels written by Alan Mooore, famous for writing 'Watchmen' and 'The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen', and illustrated by David Lloyd. Now, I admit I have never read the source material, so I can't make comparisons or gauge how faithful the film is to the comics. But, the film is certainly good enough to stand on its own, even for the uninitiated. And for any squemish parents, unlike most action-adventure films, and even unlike other comic-based films such as 'Spider-Man' or 'X-Men', it's actually educational.
'Remember, remember/The 5th of November/The gunpowder treason and plot/I see no reason/Why the gunpowder treason/Should ever be forgot. Clever rhyme, but in case you're wondering what they're talking about, look into The Gunpowder Plot and Guy Fawkes. Everything serves a purpose and it makes no apologies in getting it's message across.
In today's ever-declining economy and hostile political climate, this film has a message that rings true now more than ever: people shouldn't be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people. Watching this film gave me hope. That things can change for the better, if we so wish it to be.
Pros: this movie is outstanding!!!
Cons: I didn't see anything wrong at all....
This movie is soo good, that I don't want to give it away. It has everything you need, action, adventure, a little romance, explosions, the works!!!!!
If you haven't seen this, go see is now!!
Pros: Powerful, moving story that will make you think
Cons: Can be hard to hear at times (hence my love of subtitles)
I'd seen the commercials for this movie before it hit the theaters. It looked interesting enough so I popped it in my rental queue at Netflix. So earlier this month, I went to pay for my mailbox. There was a Columbia House mailer in with my stuff featuring V for Vendetta. The guy at the counter asked if I had seen it yet. I said no, it was in my rental queue. He replied that when I got it, I should watch it immediately, then watch it again cause it was just that good! Later I hit Hastings, wanting to rent something and having no Netflix to watch. I picked up three anime disks, and decided to go ahead and get V for Vendetta. At check out, the guy there also mentioned that it was an awesome movie.
So after getting home with some Chinese and the movies, I popped in V for Vendetta. After two such glowing reviews, I figured I was in for a treat. I'm happy to say, I was not mislead! V for Vendetta is a deep, multi-faceted movie with an awesome story, great graphics and special effects, and good acting. Evey Hammond is one of many living in a world where fear and "religion" rule, and the thing people fear most is their government and it's religious leaders. Her world changes when she breaks curfew to see her lover and is caught. As those responsible for enforcing the law are getting ready to rape her to teach her a lesson, she is saved by strangely verbose fellow who eventually calls himself V. This encounter changes her life forever as she learns that what is right isn't always gained by following the rules, and what true inner strength is.
Apparently it is based on a comic book, but I've never read it so I can't really comment on whether it was true to the source or not. I do know, however, that this is a great movie. The world created within V for Vendetta is rich and well detailed, with just enough reflection of what could happen in our own world to make it a frightening prospect. V himself is a wonderfully complex character, not entirely good, but certainly not evil either. The action is well balanced, with the emphasis being more on the story and not on the fighting.
It's hard to say too much without giving too much away. I will say, don't let some of the trailers fool you. It is more than just a vigilante at large story! I can certainly understand the glowing reviews I received, and I think the best I can say is to echo them. If you haven't seen it, watch it! Even better, just go ahead and buy it, because it is definitely one that will benefit from multiple viewings.
Also, I'd go for the two disk edition for more extras. The first release was a single release with few extras.
Pros: Beautiful film full of color, framatic, and down right dirty
Cons: natilie portmans character
Although V the main character could have confused some people, I can see why it left theaters so quickly. But was an amazing action flick. I fount VTV to be a riot! He had his own logo and everything! I guess you have to be a computer geek to appreciate it. Let me see, oh and when he was sword fighting with his own suit of armor. They gave a light overtone to his character which is nice. Hard to belive it's MR SMITH "mr anderson" under that mask. Too great. Onto the leading ladies part, she was good.. although like i mentioned before her character is very whiney and i know that her character was an air head originally in the comics and they tried to give her a little more "meat" shall we say but yeah. But as the movie progressed and she became a hardass she became a LOT more tolerable. Also another buy-able!
Pros: Opens your eyes to the possible future...
Cons: Implications could have been left out
I went and saw this in the theater the day it came out, then bought it the day it was released on DVD. I must say, V is one of my new favorite movies. While it opens the eyes to the possibilities of what could happen, and helps people understand how a government should and should not work by using extreme examples, there were parts of the story that could have been left out. Without the backplot of America becoming a wasteland due to a war we started (presumably the one we're in now), the story could have been just as effective. While I appreciate and admire the courage to put such a thing in a movie, there are way too many American's that fear such a thing to be faced with the outcome on television - even in fiction. The Anti-Bush sign that pops up during a 'flashback' most definately could have been left out. I loved the movie, will watch it a thousand more times, but I believe it would appeal to a larger population without those.
Pros: Great story, acting and filming
Cons: None
As other reviewers have mentioned, this is the modern telling of the Guy Fawkes story. I feel this movie has great relevance to the US and this current administration: Governments do not control the people, the people control their governments. Excellent movie - superbly told!
Pros: The moral of the story
Cons: The sound was terrible
We purchased this DVD thinking it would be great for our collection. It was a great flick overall in terms of the message that the movie was trying to express. "People shouldn't fear their government, the government should fear it's people." But the big thing for us was the sound. My husband was constantly turning up the volume or turning it down again. Maybe it was just our entertainment system, but it became a pain because when there was loud music or noises we'd hve to turn it down, but be too late to turn it back up when the important details were being released for storyline purposes. I felt a lot of emotion in that movie. I wasn't over all impressed, but it had a great message.
Pros: everything
Cons: nothing
great movie you should get it
Pros: We shouldn't fear our Government
Cons: Government should fear us.
A movie to watch. Its intense message is something we should all watch and learn. Our Government should fear us, not the other way around. Like history we can learn from it and prevent something like this from happening again.
Acting was great, you were angry when they were and cried with them, feeling the emotions and troubles these characters faced.
Pros: People should not fear their government.
Cons: The government should fear its people.
The hero/villain, known only as V, is a modern `rendition' (pun intended) of Guy Fawkes, the man who was captured, tortured, and confessed his part in attempting to blow up the British Parliament building in 1605. V recites the following poem amongst many others throughout the movie: "Remember Remember, the 5th of November, Gunpowder Treason and Plot. We see no reason, why Gunpowder Treason, should ever be forgot!" However, the movie is neither a justification for the Catholic rebels of 400 years ago nor a condemnation of the King James administration, which was also a target of the Gunpowder Plot. Perhaps I can best summarize _V for Vendetta_ as an examination of the proper place in this world of those who would say, "We need hope, not buildings" or "Ideas are bulletproof." Are such idealists too dangerous to be tolerated? Do natural rights or even constitutional rights prohibit pre-emptive prosecution of thought crimes?
Political philosophy is always a mix of the real and the ideal. So what better venue than a comic-book inspired movie to provoke more questions than I could even enumerate in a simple movie review--questions concerning the role of citizens, the power of government, the justification of violence, retribution, toleration, propaganda, etc? Moral issues presented in _V for Vendetta_ range from unquestionable acknowledgement of the existence of evil in dystopian government controllers to more relativistic and difficult-to-grasp concepts that many viewers might never have even doubted before watching this movie. Then again, much of what you take from this movie will depend on ideals you hold going in. If you are only looking for narrow applications to specific current events, you will find them. But if you limit yourself to such analogies, you will be missing out on the abundance of vital topics presented this movie.
A student of Zen training methods may appreciate the direct personal experiences that Evey (Natalie Portman) must endure, while other may resent them. One familiar with Eastern concepts of `Self' may not be so concerned that V never removes his mask or rarely even his gloves throughout the entire movie. The Self is no more a face or flesh and bones than a State is its capital building, is it? An Existentialist may have a better appreciation for the ultimate freedom of overcoming fear and saying, "No" even to ones own existence when the alternative is decidedly intolerable. If you appreciate philosophy in general, or political philosophy more specifically, or if you've enjoyed books like _We_, _Fahrenheit 451_, _1984_, or _Brave New World_, you will enjoy _V for Vendetta_. But of course no prior knowledge is required to enjoy this action-packed and thought-provoking movie. I suspect it will stimulate many discussions and perhaps even an interest in further reading.
