Pros: Rick fresh out of jail, recording again.

    Cons: Lost some edge.

I am a diehard Rick James fan, but I am also a realist. I anticipated Rick's release from Folsom prison in hopes that we could continue the party that Rick started. I feel a 150% effort form Rick on this album, but for some reason I wasn't as... moved as I have been in the past. As ususal Rick's musical ability shines through like the sun through a lace curtain. But I think his time away left him with somewhat of a gap as far as time is concerned. He has some interesting guest vocals in Snoop Dogg, Rappin Fortay and a few other worthy vocal talents, but much to my dismay I can't give Rick the overwhelming support that I would like to on this project. On a scale of one to ten I give Urban Rapsody a 4. Rick James, the original thug and not afraid to be himself. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Urban Rapsody

  • All Music Guide

Rick James spent most of the '90s either fighting the law or incarcerated, which naturally hurt his career. But what was more damaging to his musical reputation was the fact that he had spent the latter half of the '80s in creative limbo, producing only a handful of worthy tracks. Urban Rapsody was the 1997 comeback effort that was supposed to restore his personal and professional reputations, and to a certain extent, it does just that. The media blitz that accompanied its release did forcefully bring him back into the spotlight, and his collaborations with Snoop Doggy Dogg and Rappin' 4-Tay brought him to a younger audience, while his collaborations with Bobby Womack and Charlie Wilson retained his older following. However, Urban Rapsody doesn't really offer anything new -- it's the same collection of smooth ballads and freaky urban funk that he's been peddling since the late '70s. The lack of variety is a bit of a disappointment, but that disappointment is tempered by the fact that m...uch of the album is well-crafted and performed, illustrating that James has not entirely lost it. While the lack of variety prevents Urban Rapsody from being a totally triumphant comeback, the cuts that do work help make the record his best album in over a decade. - Leo Stanley, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Rick James

In the late '70s, when the fortunes of Motown Records seemed to be flagging, Rick James came along and rescued the company, providing funky hits that updated the label's style and saw it through into the mid-'80s. Actually, James had been with Motown earlier, though nothing had come of it. After growing up in Buffalo and running away to join the Naval Reserves, he ran a... Read more
