One of the Best Albums from the UK!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 12, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Urban Hymns review helpful

Pros: A must for every fan of UK Rock!

Cons: Over played 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' in Commercials.

The first time I ever heard of The Verve was back in 1997, I was in HS, and KROQ's annual Calendar's bonus cd's first track was The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony". I was hooked even though this song has reached the radio ai...rwaves/commercials/tv exposure, and the music video where Richard Ashcroft is just walking down the street lip synching to the song while bumping into pedestrians and cars is one of the most interesting music videos. "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "Sonnet", my personal favorite- "The Drugs Don't Work", "Space and Time", "Lucky Man"(in the movies such as 'The Girl Next Door'), and "One Day". Its sad to hear that the band has split up, but their music they have created will forever be considered one of UK and the world of rocks best! Read more Less

    THE VERVE ARE MY GODS.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 27, 1999 | 1 out of 1 found this Urban Hymns review helpful

Yes! I have found my choice for best album of the decade! I love this album so much I think I will take it with me to the grave! Richard Ashcroft, Nick Mcabe, Simon Tong, Simon Jones, and Peter Salisbury have mangaged to create an album which covers... all moods, and with such elegance! The lyrics are all touching. I have never heard anything touching as this: "'Cus baby oh, if heaven calls, I'm coming too. Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead," or "The times, the highs, breaking up your mind, can't you hear there's beauty in life?" Richard Ashcroft is my favourite poet. But the climax is when Richard Ashcroft yells in the last song "Come On", "This is a big @%#$ you!" He does it with such rawness and anger that you feel shivers.KICK ASS ALBUM, AND A MUST HAVE!!!! their finest hour

This and "Northern Soul" are two of my favourite albums of all time. Every track on this is mellow and beautiful, and its a shame that they split up shortly after. Is it true that Liam Gallagher appears on "Come On" and if so, when?

"Sonnet","The drugs dont work","Bittersweet symphony" and "Velvet morning" are the obvious stand out tracks but the general quality of the album is good. A Great mix and Nick Mcabe proves that he is one of the better guitarists

    Classic!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 20, 2000

1997 was a wonderful year in which many good albums were launched, namely, Be here from Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene's Marchin' Already, etc... but I find this is the best album of that year. It's a pity The Verve won't be round over the next years. A ...classic album. Ithas got everything. God save this album, God save the Verve. Read more Less
