  • All Music Guide

This is a very solidand decent sounding of recordings by the great guitarist and singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe on Indigo, compiled from her most fruitful and best known period193848, the 22 cuts here focus on her developments not only as a player, writer and singer, but also as an artist who melded perfectly the blues and the new gospel sounds of Thomas A. Dorsey. Tharpe arranged her own material near the end of this period and the considerable polish pout in her recordings conveys a sophistication not seen before or really heard since by female blues and gospel singers. Recommended.
