All of the modes of play and maps from Unreal Tournament 2003, along with the downloadable mission packs from 2003, more than 20 original maps, and a number of other features can be found in Unreal Tournament 2004. One major addition to the Unreal Tournament series is the inclusion of vehicles. Both land and air-based vehicles are accessible, as are a number of new weapons, including land mines, rocket-propelled grenades, and stationary gun turrets.

Returning from the original Unreal Tournament is Assault mode, which has one team attacking an objective while another defends the objective. After one round, the teams switch sides with the former defenders attempting to complete the assault faster than the other team. New to the series is Onslaught mode, which is where users will utilize the aforementioned vehicles. Maps in Onslaught mode are much larger than those found in the other modes of play. Teams are required to capture Power Nodes as they progress across the map, eventually establishing a link to the enemy's Power Core and destroying it.

The developers have also added a number of enhancements to improve the online community. Demo recording allows users to record their games and later show them off to friends. Players can watch other players battle it out live as well by logging onto the UnrealTV broadcast system. Live chat is built-in too, but game players will have to supply their own microphone to take advantage of it.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is fully compatible with Unreal Tournament 2003, allowing all user-created mods and maps from the 2003 game to work with the 2004 title. Players can log onto any server running the 2003 game, however, Unreal Tournament 2003 players will not be able to log onto servers running Unreal Tournament 2004. ~ Jonathan Sutyak, All Game Guide

    Pros: Everything is better!

Cons: New vehicles take a little getting used to.

I just played the demo and the graphics look incredible and the game runs smooth. The new mode 'Onslaught' is a fun new addition. The object is to take over the other team's power nodes until you reach their power core and destroy it, whi...ch wins the game. Onslaught features air and ground based vehicles that add to the overall coolness of the game. The Hellbender is my favorite ground vehicle, it is a Hummer-type car that has a machine gun mounted on the back. One person drives, the other shoots. If you look closely at the license plate on the back of the car, it has your player name engraved on it like a real license plate. Just that little addition game me the feeling that it is 'my' game and made me wanna play it more. The other ground vehicles are the behemoth and the scorpion. The behemoth is a fairly slow moving tank but can damage things easily and has a takes damage slowly. The scorpion is a jeep-like vehicle that shoots a line that wraps around an enemy and kills them. The scorpion also has two extendible blades that come out from the side of the car and slices members of the opposite team. The aircraft, such as the manta and the raptor are a little harder to use than the ground vehicles. It took me a few tries to figure out how to get the raptor higher. The raptor is the highest flying air vehicle. The manta flys but only a couple of feet off of the ground but it is very fast. So far onslaught is the only mode i have played so far. But from what i've seen, the actual full version is going to be great. i've already put $20 down for the special edition version which includes 2 dvd's and a headset for chatting with fellow players. I cant wait! Read more Less

    My favorite shooting game

By Mitchell  Feb 29, 2004 | 3 out of 3 found this Unreal Tournament 2004 review helpful

Pros: flawless, fast-paced, nice array of weapons, tanks, trucks and such, great graphics, reliable, I could go on and on

Cons: You need a decently fast computer and graphics card

This game rocks! It is my new favorite shooting game! I love how much teamwork means to your team in this game, not only does your team rely on you to get points, but now you need to help by getting in multiple player things like tanks and trucks. In... the tanks and trucks one person can drive while two other people man the cannons, in the tank, one person can drive and shoot the main cannon, while another shoots the AA cannon on top. There is also a raptor which is a flying machine and is required to get the redeemer (a kind of mini-nuke launcher) on the level "Torlan". Read more Less

Atari - Unreal Tournament 2004 review

Absolutely fantastic. Perhaps owners of Unreal Tournament 2003 may have wanted more (although a £7.50 rebate offer is currently running to offset that), but this is surely what action gaming is all about. Essential, especially if you're looking to play it online. Read more
