This CD of dubious merit compiles some of Can's early studio recordings from 1968 and 1969 when Malcolm Mooney was on vocals and the rest of the group played in a far more bluesy style than normal. Some tracks like the instrumental "Kama Sutra 2" sound almost like straight ahead blues jamming, with harmonica and guitar solos over a fast bouncy 1-4-5 rhythm. The two "Kama Sutra" pieces (which are not the same as the "Kama Sutra" single released in 1968 under keyboardist Irmin Schmidt's name) and the odd little "De La Halle" are the only tracks that are not on the regular CDs, the others are alternative versions, four from Delay 1968, and a couple from each of Unlimited, and Monster Movie. A few of the titles have been renamed, from the obvious ones ("Froggie Toadie" for "Little Town" and "Moving Slowly" for "Uphill") to the less obvious ("Connection" from Unlimited, disguised here as "Million Seller," or "Pnoom" which on this release is called "EFS 5") Unfortunately the sound on this CD is very muddy, so that these alternative versions, which are not that different, suffer in comparison to the ones originally released on the proper albums. The stodgy sound dampens the vitality of these pieces, especially when compared to the raw energy of the tracks on Monster Movie and Delay 1968. With very little new material, and the rest of the stuff available with better fidelity elsewhere, this rare release has very little to recommend, except as shelf filler for the Can fanatic.
