Another solid compilation from ITP's Underground Oldies series containing 16 unsung and underappreciated recordings you probably haven't heard but won't be disappointed with when you do. Known artists Gene Chandler, Barbara Mason, and Barbara Lynn all perform tracks that didn't do much, but are good examples of their artistry. But it's the local and regional hits, i.e., the Superbs' "It Hurts So Much," the Younghearts' rendition of "Hey Love," and Black Ivory's "No One Else Will Do" that make these volumes so special. Along with obscure treats like Frankie the Spindells' live version of the Chi-lites' "Have You Seen Her" are the Escorts' "I Loved and I Lost" originally done by the Impressions, the Rotations' "If I Could Be Like Columbus (Where Would We Be)," and Grand Thefts' "How Could You Be So Cold." Sam and Bill's romantic "For Your Love" is the most recognizable recording, but nothing on this CD prompts you to hit the skip button; the repeat button, however, will get a workout.
