Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin

    Pros: All Pros

    Cons: No Cons

Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin ReviewAvril Lavigne appears clad in a black tutu on the cover of her new album, Under My Skin. While on first glance this looks to be nothing more than a generic album cover, further analysis will reveal a poignant insig...ht into the psyche of Avril and the theme of the record. For, externally Avril might appear standoffish, dark, rebellious, and “anti-everything” (as portrayed by the pseudo-goth duds), beyond the media misinformation she is simply a shy, vulnerable, impassioned little girl searching for her piece of a fairytale (hence the tutu). There are songs on Under My Skin that play to both sides of Avril. Don’t Tell Me, the first single, quite obviously fits in the former category. Co-written by Avril and her guitarist Evan Taubenfeld before Complicated was even released, Don’t Tell Me is a pro-abstinence power anthem designated as a bridge single to bring fans of Avril’s old material into her new, more mature sound. Other members of this group include the following: He Wasn’t – touted Sk8er Boi part II; Who Knows – an utterly catching song with all the markings of a radio hit; Freak Out – a divinely innocent track reminiscent of Green day; and I Always Get What I Want – Avril’s attempt at poking fun at her media image. It is in the latter grouping of songs where the heart of the album can be found. Under My Skin opens hard and heavy with Take Me Away. This track reveals the inner conflict within a girl wanting to protect her heart from being broken, while letting her love ”take her away”. Next is Avril’s personal favourite, Together. The only mot juste for describing this song is “perfect”, although perfection hardly does the song justice. It is here that Avril defines herself and establishes a sound that is distinctly hers. Another such track is Forgotten – a raging tirade that will rape you of your soul and leave you incensed, unhinged, and yet fulfilled. My Happy Ending, the second single to be released shortly, illustrates Avril’s romantic inner-self, and the failure of her partner in meeting her idealized standards. While some passion is lost in the final production of the song, this is a brilliant example of Avril’s growth since Let Go.The four remaining songs are softer, slower, but still forceful. How Does is Feel is a subtly emotional and beautiful ballad that pulls at your heartstrings with each of its many rises and falls. Then there is Nobody’s Home – a collaboration with Ben Moody formerly of Evanescence, and a likely next single. This is the only song on Under My Skin where the subject is not Avril herself, which seems to grant Avril the freedom to create a despondent character and employ imagery beyond her usual capacity. Fall to Pieces is another romantically inclined ballad expressing Avril’s desire to keep alive the flame of a failing relationship. The album ends with a magnificently painful ode to Avril’s recently passed-on grandfather entitled Slipped Away. You can hear the tears in her voice, and anyone equipped with a heart cannot help but shed a tear at this sonorous eulogy. Under My Skin is an emotional, dark, and rapturous creation that, in a mere 45 minutes, captures many of the thoughts we find impossible to express. In this more organic sophmore attempt, Avril proves her talents when she is given the artistic freedom to create an album free of external pressure. Those who explore the CD for themselves will be rewarded with an intelligently written and well-executed album, which is sure to become the soundtrack of a generation. As the promotional tag says, “Avril Lavigne’s Under My Skin is sure to get under yours”. Read more Less

    Lavigne's sophomore album

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 19, 2004 | 6 out of 10 found this Under My Skin review helpful

    Pros: CD shows growth

    Cons: None

Avril Lavigne's Sophomore album was one that was anticipated for more then one reason. Would the teen rocker be able to live up to the success of her first CD or would the 2nd album curse take over? Well as a fan of both Avril and "pop"... rock music i have to say that she does live up to the bar that has been set if not exceeds it. With powerful tracks such as "Forgotten" and "Nobodys Home" and the emotional "Sliped Away" Lavigne shows that she has not only grown as a person but as a song writer. I highly recommend this CD as one of the best of 2004 and an achievement for Lavigne Read more Less

Under My Skin Perform By April Lavigne

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 25, 2004 | 1 out of 1 found this Under My Skin review helpful

Pros: She has not forgotten how to punk/rock and roll!

Cons: I hope other singers won't try and copy her style!

It seemed like only 18-20 months ago April Lavinge was just a younger girl singing her heart out, "I love the skater, boy!" and what might have just only been percieved wrongly or not as a novelty song would of come and gone and that was th...e last we would of heard have her. NO CHANCE. This time she proves she is an ARTIST: PURE AND SIMPLE. Not just a teenager getting all wound up and yelling "Listen to my issues!" Under mY Skin is the best of her two records because she has not only has grown so much as an artist, but because she knows how to make a song that makes us dance yes of course, but also THINK. "Growing Pains" is a perfect example of her skills of describing for teens the awkward years of growing up. When she yells the final "NOOOO!!!" in the fourth or fifth song, called "You Don't Know What I Am Going Through" you almost don't know whether or not to cry. Avril is THE BEST! As others have said, 'You GO, girl!!" Read more Less

    Not bad for a prep

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 11, 2004 | 3 out of 6 found this Under My Skin review helpful

Pros: It has really good music

Cons: Some Lyrics are really cheesy.

Avril never really caught my attention until I heard "Don't Tell Me" on the radio and I thought it was kinda cool. So I borrowed the album from a friend and when I heard the first track "Take Me Away" I thought she was just co...pying from Amy Lee of Evanescence but it was cool anyway. The next song "Together" has really good music but the lyrics say "Together we built our wall". I mean what is that? The next song "Don't Tell Me" saves the album. Then there's "He Wasn't", good music, good lyrics, good way to tell a boy off. Another ugly thing is "How Does it feel". Most of the song she spends it asking "How does it feel to be different from me?" but we all know from the way she sings it that she really does not care about the answer. "My Happy Ending" the second single off the album is one of its highlights' again good music and really REALLY good lyrics. "Nobody's Home" another of the albums highlight, good music, good lyrics. "Forgotten" was the song when I thought I had to get this album (which I did) it is a really good song. "Fall to Pieces" good one not the best but it was good. Track 11 "Freak Out" has the cheesiest punk-wannabe lyrics "I'll walk around with my hands up in the air/ Cuz I don't care". "Slipped Away" is the most emotional song off the record and it has good music and really good lyrics. The whole album is good. Even if its not the kind of music you like this album is a genious and an award winner. Read more Less

    It IS Under My Skin

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 17, 2004 | 1 out of 2 found this Under My Skin review helpful

    Pros: provocative, daring, professional

    Cons: not applicable

In such a world of conformity, Avril Lavigne dares to hold high her middle finger and say, "See that tree? Go screw it." I find her brazen attitude towards society admirable, and this attitude is once against beautifully represented in he...r music. "Under My Skin" exhibits the maturity Avril has acquired through experience. If you didn't like the upbeat nature of her first album, you'll LOVE this one. There's a shadow to her music; much darker, much sexier. This is a bold slap in the face. If you're interested in a deeply cathartic medium through which to channel your emotions, this CD will do the trick. Read more Less
