spectacular!!
Depeche Mode never fail to impress with their music. I bought this CD on April 15th, 1997 when it came out not knowing how it would sound like and now I am proud of this purchase. Ultra says it all. It's their best album of the 90s. Edgy and diverse, it will never sound dated at all. DM are not just a band. They're a musical phenomenon that will never die!!! My absolute favorite is Insight. What a great song. Very creepy yet groovy. Their best song in years. By the way about all the people dogging this band Exciter, get a damn life!!! Even though I don't find it to be their best I still give it a five and it is sooooooooo much better than all the bubblegum/rap garbage that pollutes the airwaves these days. Go and buy this CD now. Throw away all your BSB, N Sync CDs and start replacing them with DM CDs instead. Trust me you will not be dissapointed with this killer album. And go and get Exciter as well.
this is really their best album, including their best song-its no good!
You need to take a good hard look in the mirror. By the way Ultra is a top album, right up with their material from 86 onwards.
Sure, Ultra may lack Alan' s innovative production skills, but the spartanic sounds make this album even more interesting. And the songs are as great as ever.
As some probably know, Alan Wilder is not part of DM any longer. Ultra was the firts release since he's left. I really think his production skills are missing here. He was a real genius about it all, making THE big sound for the group. Actually, he was the only one with enough technique to really produce this particular DM sound. All his talent can now be found on the latest RECOIL album... Recoil, to some fans, being the logical extension of DM...
<EOM>
hey the new cd is going to be called EXCITER not EXCITED, foo
for the fan who reviewed this album as "barf" I have a question and a seggestion. First, If you like Vince Clarke why do you listen to Depeche? Gore has written the last 12 albums. If in your bad taste you choose to listen to the ridiculously shallow tinkly-bonk Vince songs, try Erasure, and leave the more musically competent bands to someone less stupid.
A find coming back! M.L Gore has become important part of DM.Without Gore, t're are not Depeche Mode!
UN ALBÚM CURIOSO, CON ALTOS Y BAJOS. NO DEFRAUDA, PERO NO SORPRENDE. ES EL DISCO "MÁS DISCO" DE DEPECHE M. SU SONIDO TRISTE Y ALTIBAJO RECUERDA EL "BERLIN" DE LOU REEDO EL "CLOSER" DE JOY DIVISION; SU PERCUSIÓN EVOCA A BJORK, DISCO SATURNAL, ORGIÁSTICO Y MELÁNCÓLICO
There has never been a band who kept such a high quality on their albums for over twenty years.

It' s upposed to come out in March 2001.
Don' t miss it. Martin said it will be their most innovative and best album.
Wow! Unbelievable.
Lost for words.
This might be a symbolic return as a trio, for the group which however can't be found any creative mistake in the past, and for the future they turned out more listenable rather than danceable as they continue shaking darker aspects of life with an emotional subject matter. The trio of Gore, Gahan and Fletcher created soundscapes for the group's transitional second album 'A broken Frame' (1982) after their then-main songwriter Clarke left and before Wilder settled in perfectly in further directing the group's sound. Now when Wilder's equally successful Recoil-project continues the more-less same philosophy, DM go for their threesome strengths to oversizeable values in content. 'Ultra' rates as their best effort ever (actually it's hard to rate any of their albums because 'the best' term lies in the corner of their every previous effort). With beauty and sadness of 'Home' or total destruction of 'Barrel of a Gun' the group's sense for melody and Gore's songwriting talents proved once more the importance of Depeche Mode, and when will they ever stop, it's up to them anyway. As long as they continue surprising us like this there is no need to stop at all.
Slower, darker, more subtle. Their third masterpiece in a row.
I couldn't disagree more with the people who claim that this cd is a great disappointment. In my eyes, "Violator" represents a peak in the musical history of DM, however, this cd definitely comes close. The sound is original and mindblowing, the lyrics are interesting and insightful, and the vocals are - as usual - beautiful and heart-ripping ( god, I love his voice! ). You do not have to be a fan of DM to appreciate this cd.
Well, it's a good album, but Depeche will never
be the same again. Alan Wilder has left depeche
sadly enough.
He was the musical director of the
band.
Now that he is gone, the music isn't so good enymore.
You should check out Alan's recoil albums, who are
much better than Ultra.
As far as I can say this is another good album by D.M. Useless, Barrel of a Gun, Home are great and so are the rest. A really dark and gloomy album in a good way. I encourage all D.M. fans to get this.
Having been a fan of Depeche Mode for nearly two decades, I have seen their music develop from earnest and delicate synth-pop tunes into a deep, complicated web of sordid truths and purple trances...it seems that the entire world is contained within the music of their career...I was surprised by the album, "Songs of Faith and Devotion," as I felt that it was an attempt to abandon their signature sounds and messages...it did not seem that they were being true to themselves, and it appeared that they were experimenting with images and other such drudgery...but with the release of "ULTRA," I realized that Depeche Mode was strong enough to experiment. I believe that their music will indeed live on, not only to become part of the Classics lexicon, but by creating a new section of the Classics. If Mozart and Haydn are considered Classic by the standards of the late 1700s, and Shubert, Beethoven, and Schuman are classics of the 1800s, while Dylan, Hendrix and the Beatles are classics of the 1960s, then Depeche Mode will always be considered a classic of the 1980s to the present.
My name is Alvin, and I am 18 years old.
I
have been a Depeche Mode fan for exactly five years
now, and am absolutely fascinated by the ingenuity of
this exemplary, innovative band. Ultra is definitely
an album worth buying. Martin Gore's song writing is
impeccable, the synth/techno effects sound great, and above
all, David Gahan's voice is excellent. "Barrel of a
Gun," is a great song. I love the sound. "It's No Good"
is fabulous. My recommendation: GIVE MODE A TRY.
THEY ARE INDEED EXCELLENT. It's not only two songs
that sound good. Every single one does. Each song has
it's own beauty.
je crois qu'a long terme je prefere cet album a s.o.f.a.d. un retour au source pour DM et un son qui leurs ressemble plus ... (voir critique a propos de sofad)
