Pros: supurb actors & action, great story
Cons: Only one. There's not much compition for it. More like it and you could order a week's worth.
It has to rate as one of the best sub/war /suspence/ and espionage movie of this genre. All the actors have been well picked for their parts, & they play off each other just right. Very well directed and thought out. If you're looking for a movie of this sort and can only pick one, pick this one! A+
It was a spectacular movie with outstanding photography. The characters were very individually done and quite believable. The action was very incredible. The story it described was patriotic and uplifting. It was definitely a movie I would recommend purchasing on DVD for excellent picture and sound. The only setback was the extreme good fortune the characters received but this isn't an obvious theme for first time viewers or those who aren't really trying to notice these types of things. BUY IT!!!
This is an action romp that has been squeezed into the confines of a WW2 setting. There are simply not enough bad guys for the heroes to wipe out, the acting is poor and the characters stereo-typical. The camera work is so poor it gives the impression the actors could have played a quick round of tennis in the supposedly cramped setting of their U-boat. Many people slatted this film because it was the British who captured the enigma codes and not the Americans. When really you should concentrate on the lack of suspense, depth and the general poor quality of script and plot. This is an Arnie film without Arnie and not half as much fun.
The acting was only rivaled by the dull plot. If you have ever seen Das Boot or The Hunt for Red October this movie will be a huge disappointment for you. If you have low expectations you might enjoy the special effects.
Great action and acting, great effects, keeps you on your toes till the end.
I've seen it at least 5 times, and still enjoy watching it again.
One of the better war movies.
this movie has to be the best WWII movie I have seen since Saving Private Ryan!!!! I love WWII movies and I am glad that they finally wrote a good military story.
The casting was excellent,(Jon Bon Jovi & Matthew M.) the explosions, the sound effects, WOW! I really enjoyed this movie. It's a MUST SEE!!
Like I said, "They could've done it better"
If your looking for a fast paced thrill ride then U-571 is the ticket. Taking place during WWII, our story follows a U boat crew faced with a suicide mission to help uncover Nazi intelligence. While I may have my opinions about certain cast characters such as John BonJovi and Matthew McConaughey, this film was pretty damn good. Filmed on one of the most extensive sound stages ever produced for a film since Titanic, (and most of that was done on computer) this film gives you a detailed view of what it was like to serve on a u-boat in WWII, where the life expectancy of a sailor was 7 weeks* Defiantly a movie you can watch over and over....

This movie was the bomb! It had awesome grahics and it was based on a true story. It never slows down when the fighting really gets heavy, must see this film!!!
somehow misses the boat of excitement. delivers the drudgery of explosions. not fir to sit in the shadow of "bedford incident"
i think this movie was of the cheeze... it was really interesting plus it gave me an idea of how what kind of stuff my friend goes through while in service.. outstanding movie
Anyone who says this movie sucks must be blind because this movie was excellent.
STRAIGHT GARBAGE. NEEDS TO BE RE-DONE. OR BETTER YET DON'T DO IT AT ALL. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GIVE ME BACK THE MONEY I USED TO RENT THIS GARBAGE OF A MOVIE. PEACE SON.
This movie has great special effects and great actors.

THIS WAS A GOOD FILM. GREAT ACTION. GOOD ACTORS
IN THE PARTS
I WATCHED IT FOUR TIMES AND SAW
SOMETHING NEW EACH TIME. BESIDES BEING HISTORICALLY TRUE IT
WAS A VERY REALISTIC MOVIE. I WOULD SUGGEST IT TO
EVERYONE I KNOW THAT LIKES ACTION MOVIES.
This movie is very well done and easily develops a believable scenario. The acting is good, the plot is good and being based on real life events makes it more intriguing than your normal underwater thriller. The sound effects are awesome and at times I thought my house blew up due to the concusion from one of the depth charges. A good movie worthy of your time.
A GREAT MOVIE!! CERTAINLY THE SECOND BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR AFTER GLADIATOR!!FULL OF SUSPENCE AND KEEPS YOU GLUED TO THE SCREEN.TRULY, A PERFECT MOVIE WITH TOP NOTCH ACTING!! I SAW IT THREE TIMES. BY AHMAD SHAHZAD KHOKHAR
Excellent! You'll be on the edge of your seat for the entire movie
Flat out awesome movie. Much better on the bigscreen though. I went out and bought it on DVD right away. Great acting (even Bon Jovi)..lol. Definitely a must see.
U-571 was a great movie about the battle to capture the German Inigma which was used to send messages from one sub to another.
It was an overal OK movie but it's not a must see.
I had to put throw realism out the window to enjoy this movie. A very entertaining, fascinating story, but the movie just pushes the envelope a little more than it should. Very suspenseful, the acting is excellent; I just wished they stuck more with the truth side more than with Hollywood version. Regardless, a movie worth watching.
In the commentary and supplementary materials,
Writer/Director Jonathan Mostow stresses the attention to detail
and accuracy of his portrayal of WW2 submarine
warfare, and the claims he makes therefore entitle one to
be more critical of the result than
otherwise.
Much of the movie does indeed capture the essence of
the submarine environment, but Mostow can't resist
the temptation to add typical Hollywood "thriller"
incidents that are completely unrealistic. Probably the
most glaring impossibility/
improbability was the
undersea battle between the two U-boats firing torpedoes
at each other. The chances of either U-boat's
torpedoes getting anywhere near close to the other U-boat
are close to zero, and I think perhaps only once in
the entire war did a submarine successfully torpedo a
submerged enemy submarine (firing into an unsuspecting
target sub broadside-on not bow-on). Plainly also the
torpedoes in this movie did not have magnetic/proximity
detonators (the torpedo sliding along the side of
U571!).
Indeed, Mostow gets the torpedo issues wrong most of the
time. The movie opens with the U571 (in German hands)
torpedoing a merchant ship. Total time from firing the
torpedo until it explodes - oh, about five seconds! The
captain had earlier said "set speed for 35 knots" (did
the Germans also measure speed in knots?) and so this
would mean that the torpedo was travelling at 60 feet
every second - suggesting the merchant ship was only
300' away from the submarine!!! (A more realistic
distance would be five to ten times further
away).
An earlier reviewer has already commented on the
startling inaccuracy/
ineffectiveness of the German
destroyer's gunnery, contrasted against which was the amazing
ability of the heros to deploy an unfamiliar submarine
deck gun and fire it (did anyone see the gun being
loaded?) all in a couple of seconds and hit the destroyer
exactly where they wished! Hmmmm.
There were other
more trivial errors, too, but they were not so central
to the plot.
However, it was a good action
flick, and if Mostow hadn't made such pretentious claims
to accuracy, it would have been harder to criticise
these aspects of it. The DVD has loads of extra
features and material, and being available for something
under $20 most places is great value, and good
entertainment.
DTS 5.1 channel submarine movie? Well, that's almost good enough to justify a purchase, especially if you know going in that this isn't Das Boot, it is, however, a mere action flick. You aren't going to get much subtlety or cinematic refinement characterizing the ultimate horror of marine warfare...oh well...Enjoy...Salut!
This is a great Action Movie. It holds your
attention from beginning to end. You will be on the edge of
your seat.
It's also good that the movie is
available in DTS 5.1. the sound is AWESOME!!!!.......If you
have a DVD player and receiver with DTS and a good
sub..you will rock the house.I GUARANTEE it. Get this
movie.
How fortunate it is for the good guys to see that the German Navy in WWII couldn't hit a surfaced submarine 100 meters BROADSIDE with deck guns. RIDICULOUS!! It would have been like this... 1) Germans load weapon... 2) Germans shoot at sub (maybe miss)... 3) Germans make the correction... 4) Germans shoot and sink sub on second salvo... 5) Germans go grab some Hefeweizens and sing Hail the Fatherland!!!! Three stars because it at least doesn't have Mel Gibson in it. (Then the Germans would have really screwed up!!)
Alright this film was good not great but good the acting was great Mr mc conaghy its about time!!! And too all british people it was only a film no offense
