    Benson's R&B Jazz

    By Michael  Apr 17, 2002

Here is a good example of why Benson has the career duration he has experienced. While being faithful to his Jazz roots Benson finds a way to incorporate modern R&B and some tastes of funk in this album. Its very different than his Collaboration al...bum from a few years earlier, which was also wonderful but different. There are songs here to dance to, some to tap your toe and hum, and a few that are as sultry and seductive as Marvin Gaye's sexual healing. If you dont like this recording - you just dont like music. In what Benson claimed was a risk, he works with six different production teams, but if diversity was the goal, the result is just the same homogenized, synth/electronic drum-laden, pop/soul sound geared toward someone's perception of what the market would bear. Benson sings well, as always, but again, the biggest problem, as has been the case from In Your Eyes onward, is crummy song material. Without Benson's improvising guitar to take the music somewhere else, all you have left are the so-called tunes -- and brother, that's not a lot. The one blast of fresh air is Curtis Mayfield's oldie "Let's Do It Again," which has a nice groove, and "You're Still My Baby," the sole instrumental, finds the Benson guitar in good shape, if not terribly challenged. "Everybody does it but that don't make it right," sing the voices on one cut -- a fitting epitaph for this album's attempt to chase the charts.

Biography

The George Benson Quartet

These days, George Benson (born March 22, 1943, Pittsburgh, PA) is often described as a commercial RB/pop singer who sometimes moonlights as a pop-jazz guitarist. But early in his career -- when Benson was still in his twenties -- the jazz world thought of him as a guitar-playing hard bop/soul-jazz instrumentalist whose primary influences were Wes Montgomery and Charlie... Read more
