Influenced by British Invasion bands and '60s psychedelia, particularly the Byrds, 27 Various began as a duo from Minneapolis -- guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Ed Ackerson and drummer Jed Mayer -- who fleshed out their sound on record through overdubs, playing all the instruments themselves. This approach worked on their 1987 debut, Hi., but for its 1989 follow-up, Yes, Indeed, two more members were recruited to create a real performing unit.
