A different side of Ronnie James Dio

At first when I listened to this album, I was actaully dissapointed cause I was expecting for them to rock as hard like Rainbow or Black Sabbath and I was going to give up on this album and tried to sell it, but they refused to buy it and later when ...I listened to it again, I loved it, my favorite songs are Liberty Road, When She Smiles, Prentice Wood and Wonderworld, I think that they should revive this album and it's a must have for classic rock fans but beware, it's extremely hard to find, possibly out of print although it shouldn't be but who knows, maybe they'll revive sooner or later cause Ronnie James Dio was in numerous bands since 1957.I'm glad that I gave this album a second chance cause to me, it feels like a collector's item cause not everybody is going to have the chance to get this album and it truly deserves more recognition than what it gets. Pro Reviews: Trying to Burn the Sun

  • All Music Guide

Recorded while the band was evolving slowly into the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Trying to Burn the Sun is the third and final release from Elf, the band that finally earned Ronnie James Dio the attention he had been seeking since the late '50s. After writing and recording a few singles for Blackmore, Dio and Elf were solidly moving in a heavier musical direction, no doubt influenced by Deep Purple and the British supergroup's lead guitarist. Standout cuts include "Wonderworld" and "Streetwalker," two cuts that were somehow placed at the tail end of the record, despite their strong melodies and musicianship. Because the Rainbow debut was released during the same year, this record was slightly overlooked, even though the band had established a small amount of momentum in Europe and Japan especially. So while only available as an import CD in the U.S., Trying to Burn the Sun is a great listen for fans of '70s rock, not just Dio/Rainbow fans.

Biography

Elf

The early-'70s rock outfit Elf is best-known as the group that gave singer Ronnie James Dio his start and he would eventually set his sights on a tougher, metallic sound, fronting the likes of Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own solo band, Dio. The group went through several name changes in the late '60s (the Electric Elves, the Elves), before settling simply on Elf and... Read more
