From AMG Reviews

Cormega continues to do on The True Meaning what he began on his previous album, The Realness -- prove that he deserves his much-hyped reputation. After all, how many rappers would dare throw barbs at Nas? Jay-Z did and you saw what happened. Well, with the exception of "Love in Love Out" -- where Cormega answers Nas' "Destroy Rebuild" over a crackling sample of the beat from Isaac Hayes' "Your Love Is So Doggone Good" -- he saves most of his barbs for the streets: the much-circulated Nas disses "A Slick Response" and "Realmatic" aren't here, if you're wondering. Still, he stands as a fearless, confident rapper on The True Meaning, calling himself "Queensbridge's most respected rapper" on "Ain't Gone Change," a brief testament where he declares his dedication to the underground rather than commerce. He may not care much for Nas, but Cormega definitely cares about hip-hop. Every track here bleeds with passion. Cormega has much to say about hip-hop culture (and street culture, in turn) and says it lucidly and articulately. You really want to hear what he has to say, and that's perhaps why the brevity of The True Meaning, which clocks in at under 40 minutes, is a bit disappointing. You want more. You really do. But Cormega doesn't waste any time, dropping two or three verses per song and then moving on to the next -- giving you three minutes, at most, per track. There are a few songs that break from this formula: the big hooks of the title track and the Large Professor verse on "The Come Up," for instance. Yet for the most part, Cormega sticks to lyric-spitting and not much else -- no big-name guests, no skits, no girl-boy duets, no frills anywhere -- precisely the reason why hip-hop purists have championed him.
