Out With a Bang
, June 23, 2000Tripping Daisy's first full-length album on the new Good Records label was to be their swan song. The band had made clear that they were exploring new avenues when they released the EP "Tops off Our Head" about a year before. The EP was largely a collection of improv jam-sessions, meant to showcase Daisy's songwriting style. In "Tops," the five-part harmony used effectively in "Jesus Hits" was clearly developing as well as more complex and dynamic song structures. Daisy's eponymous album is the next logical step. Those ideas that were in development on "Tops" are seen to fruition on the new album. Clearly, Daisy was not content to keep turning out the same songs reworked over and over, but was always in transition. Songs such as "Drama Day Weekend," "Tragiverse," and "The Sudden Shift Worried Him" show DeLaughter and company exploring new avenues, unafraid to venture further into sound texturing and mood shaping. Furthermore, the reputation for the happy-go-lucky attitude that they have aquired was being challenged as Tim's writings were exploring more personal issues than before, be it the birth of his daughter, Stella, on "Stella is a Planet," or the aforementioned "Drama Day Weekend" which seems to be a reaction to a fight with his significant other. Somehow, these personal experiences are translated into song in such a way that the audience can instantly relate, regardless of the fact there are no specifics. Other songs have no apparent meaning other than to convey a feeling. DeLaughter himself is reluctant to talk about the meanings of his songs, sometimes questioning his own understanding of them. "Tripping Daisy" is the audial picture of a band in transition. Becoming bigger, better. Unfortunately, we will never see where they were headed because Tripping Daisy disbanded in December of 1999, after founding member and guitarist Wes Berggren died in October of that year. This posthumous album was never intended to be their last, but unfortunately, it is. ... -
Tripping Daisy grows into their name
, March 31, 2000Reviewer: Keith Stephens - See all Keith Stephens's reviewsWhile this album is no "Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb", it shows the maturity of a group that has not only grown up a lot, but grown into their name. I get the feeling that, although I already like this album a lot, it will grow on me even more. "Kids Are Calling" is a wonderful pop tune on the level with "Sonic Bloom". "Tragiverse" is a great rock epic in which Wes Berggren soars to unbelievable heights, and "Halo Comb" is a jam that is clearly reminiscent of a Daisy live show. All of the songs are great, and even though 2 were added to the album, the flow between them is really good. The prophetic-ness (that's not a real word!_ of "The Sudden Shift Worried Him" is frightening. Go Buy This Good Record.

Pro Reviews: Tripping Daisy
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Tripping Daisy's eponymous final album was recorded prior to the death of guitarist Wes Berggren. On it they continue to experiment with their style of Beatlesque grunge. The most definitive and memorable of these is songs is "Tragiverse," a sweeping tune that fades in and out from a slow quiet melody to a fast-paced psychedelic free for all. At times the album falters, especially on "Kids Are Calling" when the band plays a more edgier '90s rock sound and has harmony vocals that come across as rather annoying instead of adding depth. Still the album serves as a rather fitting swan song for the group. - Curtis Zimmermann, All Music Guide |
